CHICAGO MAJOR RACING SEASON BEGINS SATURDAY HAWTHORNE THE SCENE Sundays Open House Reveals Everything Ready for Nearby Opening. ■ Corinto Assigned Top Weight of 120 Pounds for ,000 Added Inaugural Handicap. Chicagos major racing season is near at hand, with the opening of the ever-popular and close-by Hawthorne set for next Saturday, May 23. That the Chicago Business Mens Racing Association has everything prepared for the auspicious occasion was revealed Sunday, when an immense crowd of fans accepted the invitation of the management to visit the course and found not only the innovations and improvements completed, but the entire plant in thorough readiness and looking prettier than ever before. One of the features that attracted much interest from those who attended the "open house" was the Foto-Electric Eye, which has been installed to decide all close finishes during the coming meeting. The Foto-Electric Eye, which is being used for the first time on an Illinois track, was put into use during the afternoon, when a pony race was staged for the amusement of the many spectators who came out to look over the plant prior to the opening. Mr. Sabath, who returned from New York Sunday morning, announced that another new feature that has been arranged for is a new type of result numbers on the two result boards located in the infield. Unlike the system of dropping the painted numbers into a slot for each race, the result board has been equipped with neon signs, which are controlled from the judges stand. Two neon signs erected on either side of the topmost point of the judges stand will be flashed when a finish is to be decided by the Foto-Electric Eye, which requires two and one-half minutes to reproduce the picture and convey it to the judges stand. OVERABUNDANCE OF HORSES. Superintendent Ben Miller has the plant in spick and span condition for the opening next Saturday, but has only one regret. That is that there are too many horses for what stalls that are available at Hawthorne and Sportsmans Park. Miller stated that twelve racers, including Bow and Arrow, Illinois and Chicago Derby candidate from the stable of Col. E. R. Brad- ; ley, will arrive from Pimlico. and others are to be sent to Hawthorne from Idle Hour I Farm. The horses of the following owners are | already quartered at the Cicero course: A. 1 J.
