I I Here and There j on the Turf i i » Bold Venture Races Like Cham- | pion ♦ ! Granville Staged Grim Fight j Belmont Stakes Gains Interest I ; Hollyrood After Latonia Derby j One of the finest races your correspondent has been privileged to witness was the Preakness Saturday, in which Bold Venture duplicated his smart Kentucky Derby performance to defeat Granville by a nose. Bold Venture had to overcome trouble all during the opening mile and he did it in the manner of a champion. He never suffered any interference, however, except a small amount at the start, but George Woolf was prepared for it and the St. Germans — Possible colt was clear in an instant. Through the back stretch Woolf had but two courses open to him, the outside and in between horses. Memory Book ranged alongside of Morton L. Schwartz colt, so Woolf decided to take j his chances on the inside, which turned out to be the correct move, because the Green-tree Stable representative was forced far out in the track on the turn and lost so much ground that he weakened in the final furlong after reaching a threatening position. Bold Venture advanced between horses until midway on the second turn, where he was effectively pocketed, and Woolf was compelled to ease him back, which may have been a beneficial breathing spell to him. Suddenly He Did weakened and Bold Venture was able to resume his attack, rushing through to the outside to go by Transporter and Jean Bart and after Granville. Upon overtaking the Gallant Fox colt, Bold Venture found him a stubborn foe and only .his courage plus Woolfs finishing strength enabled him to add the Preakness to his Kentucky Derby triumph. Jimmy Stout handled Granville in faultless fashion in forcing Bow and Arrows early pace and maintaining the lead around the second turn, but he is a small lad and wasnt quite equal to the task of matching Woolfs power. Granville was game, so that Bold Ventures margin was less at the finish than it was further up the stretch. Granvilles Preakness performance gives the Kentucky Derby a new aspect and assuming that William Woodwards colt did not fall down at Churchill Downs, the finish of Americas most popular race may have been a three-cornered affair instead of a duel between Bold Venture and Brevity. Everything that has happened so far this season makes the Belmont Stakes shape up as a very attractive contest. The mile and one-half event not only will make it possible for Bold Venture, Brevity and Granville to settle their differences, but it also will determine if Red Rain and other late developing colts possess championship caliber. The Westchester Racing Association possesses a natural and if they make the most of it Belmont Park will be a thickly populated area on June 6. In the meantime, the Withers is the next important Belmont fixture and will bring together Brevity, Red Rain, Delphinium, Coldstream and others for a mile test on Saturday to determine which of the field deserves further preparation for the longer race. Max Hirsch has decided against any further campaigning for Bold Venture until the Belmont, which means the St. Germans colt will not be shipped West for either the igtonia or Illinois Derbys. Schwartz is very anxious for his colt to become the fourth horse to triumph in Americas triple crown, which is composed of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes, and he does not wish to take any chances of knocking out Bold Venture by shipping him to Kentucky or Chicago. With two weeks between his races, Bold Venture should be in a position to maintain his strength and to go into the Belmont in the best condition, it being realized by his connections that he must be ! at tops if he is to turn back the challenges of Brevity, Red Rain and Granville. Hal Price Headley was so encouraged with I Hollyroods Preakness performance that the son of High Cloud and Mandy Hamilton will be sent after the Latonia Derby, an event his half-ni.-fti r, Hnndy Mandy, won in 1927. Holly-rood h.id only begun to do well during the pant rortnlKht -»" his owner determined to find out whether he was ready for serious competition, !ilr.o knowing that the colt had a fondUMM tOt llM Ihnllco track. In the Prcaknosp, HtoHyTOOd ffll la close quarters in the early stn ;rri "n l ■"• ground at the final turn, y If hi flnktlrf boldly and was on the heels of Jem Btfi nml Transporter at the finish. Hollyrood may ho expected to improve further and he should be a very tough colt to beat in the Latonia Derby, considering that the field for that 5,000 added affair will not be as select as that which j went to the post in the Preakness. If Hollyrood races creditably at Latonia, he will be returned to New York to participate in the Belmont Stakes.
