SPARTAS LATONIA OAKS Wins Fixtures Fortieth Renewal Drawing Away From Rivals. Marica Finishes Second Light Showers During Running of Program Fail to Affect Footing. LATONIA, Ky., June 27. Dark gray clouds hovered low over Latonia this afternoon as Hal Price Headleys bay filly Sparta raced through the stretch to capture the fortieth renewal of the Latonia Oaks by the margin of one length over Howard Oots Marica, which was four lengths in front of J. B. Respess Gorgeous Lady, which held a half length advantage over the Rockhome Stables Dora May. It was the fillys initial triumph of the year and the net value to the Lexington breeder and sportsman was ,175. One of the largest crowds of the current Latonia Jockey Club meeting was on hand to cheer the daughter of St. Germans and Alcibiades, despite the fact that there was a constant threat of rain in the air. There were two light showers during the afternoon before and after the running of the fourth race, but the precipitation was not sufficient to alter the track conditions for the running of the historic event. Sparta was installed the choice over the seven other starters and returned odds of .40 for each straight invested in her chances of bringing about Headleys second accounting for the stake, as Handy Mandy was returned winner in 1927. Cleverly ridden by jockey Joe Mattioli, Continued on third page. Snow Fairy, one of the. two representatives of J. B. Resjaess, went into" the lead -before the clubhouse turn was reached, with Dora May in second place, Marica running third and Sparta next. This order was maintained going "up the back stretch, but Mat-tioli had not yet elected to make his move with the -St.; Germans filly. Around thefar turn and heading for the quarter post, Sparta began to move up, replacing Dora May in third place without much difficulty, then setting sail for Marica and Snow Fairy. The latter was shortening her stride on the turn into the stretch and proved easy prey for Maricas challenge, the Oots colorbearer taking command. However, Sparta was making her move and went past Marica and challenged for the lead. Sparta poked her muzzle in front, as the final furlong post was reached and steadily increased her advantage without the necessity of the whip being applied. Willie Hanka, on Marica, worked frantically with whip and boot but to no avail. Ten maiden two-year-olds engaged in the first race, and B. W. Stivers I Chase, a first-time starter, showed the way from start to finish to defeat Dr. Menendez, the favorite in the betting, by the margin of a half length. The latter was a nose in front of Cavour at the end of the five and a half furlongs. Under the guidance of jockey Charley Stevenson, the chestnut daughter of Broadside Pamphylia showed a nice turn of speed in leading her rivals all the way. Monks Gold, from the Chappel Brothers stable and ridden by the veteran Mack Garner, made every post a winning one in the second race at six furlongs, in which a capacity field of sprinters contested. Lyn-vete finished second, and third money was accounted for by Lady Comrade. Monks Gold, an outsider in the betting, acted badly at the starting gate, and was taken to the outside for the break. Leaving the start swiftly, the chestnut filly was in front throughout. Her backers received odds of 7.40 for tickets.
