VICARESS LEADS THROUGHOUT Holds Ann ORuley Safe in Final Stages of Jamaica Feature. Rust, Only Other Starter, Soundly Beaten-Celtic Legend Set Back and Purse Awarded to Church Parade. NEW YORK, N. Y., Oct. 7. William Woodwards Vicaress was in a running mood at Jamaica today, and the chairman of The Jockey Club was on hand to see her win the Water Blossom Handicap, over the mile and a sixteenth distance. She was only opposed by Mrs. A. A. Baronis Ann ORuley and Louis Strubs Rust, and she led from end to end to last long enough to best Ann ORuley by a half length, while Rust was never really in the running to be beaten by five lengths for the place. It was interesting sport that was furnished by the Metropolitan Jockey Club, though it opened with a disqualification, when Celtic Legend, from the Brookmeade Stable, was set back and her rider, M. Corona, suspended for ten days. The offense of the daughter of Sir Andrew was that of sharply cutting off the field shortly after the break, causing a great deal of interference. In the feature no time was lost at the start and Stout at once had Vicaress into a good lead, while Wright had Ann ORuley under a slight restraint back of her. Through the back stretch Vicaress held to her lead and Stout had a nice hold of her head as she raced along, saving ground all the way. Rounding from the back stretch, Ann ORuley was beginning to close on the daughter of Flying Ebony, but as the Woodward filly continued to gallop smoothly Continued on thtrty-tourth page. VICARESS LEADS THROUGHOUT Continued from first page. Wright went to the whip and roused his mount sharply, but Vicaress was not to be run down. Rounding into the stretch still clear. Stout called on her for her best in the final furlong and, battling along gamely, she-was still a half length to the good at the line. UTTER FAILURE. Rust had failed utterly when called on and she was five lengths back of the Baroni filly. It has been demonstrated on other occasions that Vicaress is hard to run down when she takes the track, but she has hardly been a consistent performer and in her last previous race was soundly beaten by Rust when attempting to give that filly six pounds, while they met at equal weights today. James Butlers Caught, light weight of the field in the mile and a furlong of the Hunters Point Handicap, was a surprise winner of that offering. The son of Sting was taken into the lead at- the break and soon was a half dozen lengths in front Ira Hanford kept him going to have him, a winner by two lengths over A. T. Partridges Conte, which in turn was doing his best to beat Mamas Choice from the Ascot Stable for the place. Far back "of these Star Shadow was fourth. Hanford was so alert with Caught that he was clear when the first turn was reached. There Star .Shadow was unfortunate when Yager elected to- send him along on the outside instead of dropping back and taking an inside course as was possible. As a result of this he was bumped and carried exceedingly wide by Ruffy, losing any chance he may have had. Through the back stretch it was Captain Jinks which raced in second place, but he was far back of Caught and his efforts to run down the Butler gelding resulted in his being far back at the finish. Mamas "Choice saved much ground going jinto the stretch to move into second place but Conte circled around her and finished with good courage to beat her a half length for the place. DISQUALIFICATION. Thet opening five and one-half furlongs dash Jor. maiden-juvenile fillies, saw Celtic Legend, from the Brookmeade Stable, finish first Then there came a disqualification and Mrs. C. Oliver Iselins Church Parade was declared the winner over Scottish Mary, from the Greentree Stable, with third going to J. H. Whitneys Sleep Well. The race was marked by much rough riding, and Celtic Legend was set back for having gone over from her outside position and forcing others to take up. This gave her the advantage that kept her in the forefront all the way, to cross the line with two lengths to spare. Church Parade did not suffer as much as several of the others, and she saved ground in the stretch to just beat Scottish Mary and Sleep Well. Lucky Pledge, favorite of the company, was one that was buffeted about in the running, and Ritorno was almost knocked down after leaving the back stretch. The second was a six furlongs dash for platers, and it went to Cleaveland Putnams Pompeys Squaw when she scored over Headin Home, from the Howe Stable, with C. Pillons Malmaison beating Anotherone for third. In this it was Headin Home that cut out the running, and until the stretch was reached he was holding his field safe. Then right at the end he tired, and Pompeys Squaw, which was far back in the early racing, ran him down to win going away when she saved ground on the stretch turn.
