ACCOLADE BEATS SPRINTERS Scores in Rockingham Feature After Racing in Distance Events. R. Howell Caught Napping on Happy Knot at Start and Latter Finishes Last-Lady Bcwlthus Repeats. SALEM, N. H., Oct 7. Donley Christmas Accolade, one of the best handicap performers of the New England season, was coming off distance races in todays Col. A. J. Pearce Speed Handicap at Rockingham Park, but that did not interfere with hi3 winning the five and one-half furlongs sprint The Bright Knight gelding came from behind the pace of Good Omen and Happy Knot and drew off to a two lengths triumph. At the- end Miss Anita Doris Lady Higloss was second and Good Omen third. Bright and Early finished fourth. Happy Knot was last in the field of five. "Red" Howell was caught napping on the latter when Bob Frend sent them off, and she was far back at the start When she couldnt get to the front immediately It was evident she was beaten. She was whipped up to Good Omen and reached the front at one stage, but dropped back rapidly after the brief spurt. Good Omen outbroke her field and showed the way down the back stretch, with Accolade and Lady Higloss trailing her for a quarter. There Howell tried to save the day by going to a whip ride on Happy Knot. He drove the mare into second place as they approached the far turn and headed Good Omen on the turn, but that was largely because Good Omen was faltering. It was obvious that Happy Knot was unwilling to run. After showing in front, she dropped back immediately as Accolade moved up. Good Omen held to a narrow advantage as they came into the stretch, but Accolade and Lady Higloss passed her as they approached the eighth post and both began to draw out. Lady Higloss, under top weight of 123 pounds, one more than . Accolade carried, was ho match for the Winner, but had little trouble saving the place by a length. Good Omen was dropping back fast and staggering at the end. SHOWERY WEATHER. There was a good crowd present despite threatening skies and light showers which fell intermittently during the afternoon. Mrs. W. C. Goodloes Bloddock, ridden by Georgie Watson, drove home half a length in front of the first time starter. Lambs Wool, in the first event at five and a half furlongs. The runner-up was off very slowly or might have taken it all. At the end she was two lengths in front of the favored Witless from C. W. Phelans stable. Bloddock was well placed from the start, went by the pacemaking By Path after a quarter and lasted it out to stave off Lambs Wools strong challenge in the stretch. The latter came from far back in the ruck to take the place and should improve greatly from racing education. The second race was a family affair, Reg-ula Baddun, owned by Mrs. VV. Rosen, trained by W. Rosen, and ridden by J. Rosen, scored a -front running victory. At the end he was ridden out to. score by a length over J H. Logans Draft Sergeant, the public choice. The runner-up was three lengths In front of- Miss Anita Doris Star-ogan which had he same margin to spare over Mrs. P. A,,-:Shaws Wise King, REMARKABLE FINISH. J. B. Millers Army Game, after appearing I to be a beaten horse ten yards from the finish, came again-with a final spurt to drive home a neck-,in -advance of E. A. Summers Teddy Carl 1 in the" mile" third event. C. Boyles Popo was third a length and a half back of the runner-up and two lengths in advance of Grandmas Boy. It was a hot fight between Army Game and Teddy Carl.from start to finish. Army Game set all of the pace, with Teddy Carl after him and the latter drew alongside as they approached the far turn. He drove up fast on the outside and as they straightened out, went out head and head with the leader: In the final sixteenth he surged to the front and Army Game dropped back but Jackson bore down hard, with the whip, in the final yards and made the Miller racer come again to get a narrow verdict Oaktree Stables Lady Bewithus scored a rather lucky victory in the Manchester Handicap, six furlongs dash for juveniles that was the secondary attraction on the card. She ran a good race and might have won despite the fact that Crows Flight and Manager Mike coupled as the Dixiana entry ruined each . others chances in the race. Crows Flight ran up on the heels of "Manager Mike at the half mile pole and cut the latter down so badly it was difficult to lead him from the track after the race. The accident caused Wholey, on Crows Flight, to take back and go around the field and the Dixiana juvenile still came on to finish second, two and a half lengths back of the winner. Mrs. E. A. Rotellis Woof finished third, a neck back of the runner-up. Pass Em By was fourth.
