FEATURE TO STJENSUND B. 0. Hickman Rides Own Horse in Gentlemens Race at Churchill. Derby Festival Day Serves as Fore-, runner to Regular Bleeting Cross S. Wins Sixth Event. LOUISVILLE, Ky., Oct. 30. Stjensund owned and ridden by Baylor O. Hickman, popular local sportsman, won the Gentlemens Cup Race, feature of the Kentucky Derby Festival Association one-day program at Churchill Downs this afternoon, in a thrilling finish. J. F. ONeills Riff, ridden by Scoggan Jones and favorite over the winner in the seven furlongs dash, was beaten a neck as Mrs. R. J. Wilkersons Dunwin, i on which J. Jacobson had the mount, was a length away in third place. With clear but cool weather prevailing, a fair-sized crowd was present for the afternoons sport, the proceeds of which will be used by the association in conducting the annual festival next spring in conjunction with the Kentucky Derby. The regular autumn meeting at Churchill Downs starts tomorrow, with the South Louisville Handicap as the feature, and engaging six clever horses of all ages, headed by Mucho Gusto. The Hickman gelding was next to last during the first five furlongs of the Gentlemens Cup Race, but upon reaching tho stretch, although losing ground on the turn, he charged on his rivals with such steady speed that he overtook Riff with just a few yards to go. Hickman had his mount under " restraint to the stretch and used his whip freely in making his winning rush. RIFF TIRES AT END. Riff raced Rettef into defeat in the early runningand then drew into what appeared to be a winning lead but he tired in the final sixteenth as Stjensund staged his remarkable stretch rush. Dunwin came from well back to be third at the heels of Riff as the tiring Rettef was fourth. Petty Taw made every post a winner to give Phil Reilly the opening purse. The four-year-old daughter of Masked Marvel II. and Elaine, ridden by R. Dotter and installed the favorite, held her seven plater opoonents safe during the early stages of the six furlongs dash and drew out without effort to defeat S. S. Ganos Judge Barkley by four lengths. The latter came Yrom far back on the outside to take the place by a half length over Assist as House Baby was a close fourth. Old Eli, carrying the colors of Ballard and Shannon, survived a rough race to capture the second event by a head over Mrs. W. Crumps Van Nuys, as Valdina Farm Stables Sun Petal was a nose away in third place among the ten maidens of all age3 meeting at six furlongs. Ridden by Earl Steffen and the favorite, the three-year-old Haste gelding took the lead midway of the turn and forced Van Nuys wide coming into the stretch, after which he crossed to the inside to give Sun Petal trouble. The riders of Van Nuys and Sun Petal both claimed a foul, t but the stewards refused to alter the placing. I Batman was fourth after coming from far ! back.
