DON GUZMAN BACK IN FORM Scores Handily in Wapanoag Stakes, Being Favored by Firm Footing. Easily Holds Safe New Deal and Up and Up Dead Heat Marks Decision of Fourth Race. PAWTUCKET, R.. X, Oct 30. Don Guzman, handicapped by mud in his two previous starts, returned to the form which enabled him to win three straight in this, sector earlier thi3 fall when, favored by firm footing in the Wapanoag Stakes, mile and one-sixteenth claiming affair for top-class platera which featured todays competition at Narragansett Park. At the final post the Breen and Garth six-year-old was going handily to be two lengths in advance of Araho Stable3 New Deal, with Up and Up four lengths farther away. The gelded son of St James Armada completed the distance in 1:45 to earn the ,405 which was the winners portion. He was a slight choice over Up and Up. Charlie Stevenson sent Don Guzman to the front leaving the post, to be in the clear as the field negotiated the first turn. Once the far side was reached, the western lad took the gelding in hand to hold him in reserve for the final run through the front stretch. No drive was needed, however, for no serious challenge developed in the final three-sixteenths, and at the end the veteran was going along in hand. NEVER THREATENS LEADER. New Deal, being stretched out to a distance he favors more than three-quarters dashes, was in closest pursuit of the leader from the seven furlongs post Merritt had him in hand until leaving the back stretch and then drove hard with whip, hand and heel. Despite this the Broadway Jones gelding never gave the leader an argument. Up and Up probably has staled orf. His effort suggested that much, for never was he close to the leading pair after they made the first turn. Watch Him and Bahamas were outclassed, while Watersplash wants mud. The first dead heat of the meeting occurred in the six furlongs dash that preceded the stake feature. Here Fickle Chance and Mixwell passed the winning post in such close alignment that the camera could not split them. Two lengths away; All Forlorn managed to outstay Miss Monoa for third money. Those holding tickets on Fickle Chance received .45 for each wagered, while those that wagered on Mixwell received 1.05 for . Mixwell was in closest pursuit of Miss Prudences pace, for the first half mile, making a bold run to dispose of the Dbciana filly and then hanging on with great tenacity when challenged. Fickle Chance left the post a trifle slowly and did not move into contention until making the turn. She closed with much determination on the outside in the stretch and would have been the winner In another stride. MISS PRUDENCE QUITS. All Forlorn did not break with the rapidity which has. marked, her best races and was in tight quarters on "the inside the entire distance. Miss Monoa raced steadily throughout, While Miss Prudence quit through the final furlong. Trey showed early speed and i Bonanza was at all times outrun. Flying Dere, which would have beaten Peaceful a few days back only for repeated interference, enjoyed better fortune in the sixth today. This enabled the Flying Ebony Muriel Von Der mare to race to a two and one-half lengths victory over ten I rivals. At the end the six-year-old was closely attended by Lady Uarnock, with thai miss just nosing out Dancing Cloud, which took third honors from Lone Hand by a similar margin.; The winner, ruled a slight choice in the mutuels, showing .55 to 1. The victory gave Knott a double, as he had taken the opener with Sis Royal. Lady Marnock was outpaced for the first six furlongs, but finished fast thereafter. Dancing Cloud had the speed to make the running for about seven-eighths, hanging-on well under extreme pressure in the stretch.-Lone Hand closed a big gap from a sluggish beginning. Time to Go was through early I and Felsa quit badly. SIS ROYAL UPSET. Sis Royal, ridden by K. Knott, furnished an upset in the first offering. The race was for juveniles that had not won three races, and under a claiming tag of ,000 top and bottom. The finish found the St Henry filly a length to the good of Snap. Judgment, with Royal Shoot third, half a length farther ;away. Sis Royal returned odds of 48 to 1. As the race was run Snap Judgment may have been best. Steadied along back of the pace set by Boro Poker, Snap Judgement was moving up on the inside when he was impeded sharply by Barba and was forced to take up. Sis Royal was first to overtake the faltering pacemaker in the stretch, drawing clear by the time the finish line was reached Snap Judgment, after meeting with interference, was soon back in stride again, finishing gamely in the stretch run. Royal Shoot after loooming up threateningly entering the stretch, hung in the closing sixteenth. Baydrop. a Dozer gelding from the Canadian circuit, proved good enough to turn back the big. band of sprinting platers that paraded postward in the three-quarters second race. Tempting Witch, after carrying all the pace, finished second. Cancel came from the clouds to be third in the final stride, before Transmac. Baydrop was npt hurried as the field sped down the back stretch. Tempting Witch was out in front, being closely pressed by Wise King. Swinging around the far turn. Bay-drop began moving up and, running down the pacemaker in the stretch, drew clear at the close. Tempting Witch, while unable to cope with the stretch challenge of the winner, lasted by a short margin to save second place. Danny Shea, Boston sportsman, has hot had much luck with Jezreel since claiming her last spring, so has turned the mare over to F. W. Harmon for training. Harmon won six races in Florida last season with th daughter of Pompey Jezebell
