1 ; RACES FOR DERBY ELIGIBLES Indian Hills and Trial Purse Tests for Big Feature. Churchill Downs Condition Book Reveals Opportunities for Trainers to Try Out Charges. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 9. Two opportunities for them to "tune up" in actual com- I petition, one at seven furlongs in the Indian I Hills Purse on May 1, opening day, and the I other over one mile in the Trial Purse three days later, are provided candidates for the Kentucky Derby, to be run May 8, in the Churchill Downs condition book just off the press. This, no doubt, is information of importance to trainers of three-year-olds likely to try for honors in the great 0,000 added fixture, Americas premier race,, as most horsemen prefer to race intended representatives in the future field at least once before sending them into the gruelling one mile and one-quarter Derby grind. With only twenty-five horses representing twelve interests eligible to compete in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland on April 29, the two Churchill Downs trial events are chances most vital in the preparation in many of the western Derby horses. Numerous candidates already at Churchill Downs are not eligible to start in the nine furlongs Blue Grass Stakes, though the list of entries for that Keeneland feature insures a race the result of which will have pronounced bearing on the Derby. BLUE GRASS STAKES. Eligibles for the Blue Grass Stakes are Brooklyn, Billionaire, Privileged, Galsun, Fairy Hill, Chicolorado, Forty Winks, Tattered, Eli Tale, Old Nassau, Fencing, White Tie, Petrose, Tedious, Fluke, Grand Play, Sharp Shooter, Stand In, Flying Scot, Royal Feast, Flying Cross, Ptolemy, Black Look, and Paris Prince. Included in the above list are several outstanding Derby nominees. Yet quite a few others, generally regarded as excellent Derby prospects, were not nominated for the Keeneland stake with the result that the Indian Hills Purse and Trial Purse should draw smart fields. Derby hopefuls likely to take advantage of an opportunity to race over the Downs track before the big race include Gerald, Dellor, Main Man, Scene-shifter, Fencing, No Sir, Bernard F., Chigre, Knights Plume, Valted and others. Under the conditions, winners of a race of 5,000 or more will carry top weight of 118 pounds in the Indian Hills Purse. Non-winners of a race of 5,000 are allowed three pounds; a race of 0,000, five pounds; ,000, twice, seven pounds; ,500, or four races, nine pounds; two races in 1937, eleven pounds, and maidens, thirteen pounds. TRIAL PURSE CONDITIONS. In the Trial Purse, winners of a race of 5,000 or more must take up the top weight of 118 pounds, while those not credited with winning a race of 5,000 will shoulder three pounds less; ,000, twice, or a 0,000 race, six pounds; ,500, eight pounds, and ten pounds allowance can be claimed for maidens. Three conditions races, the Faraway, at six furlongs; Slickaway, at one mile and a sixteenth, and Sagamore, at the same distance, are opportunities for Derby candidates and other three-year-olds at Keeneland prior to the Blue Grass Stakes. The Faraway is programmed for April 17th, the opening day of the meeting, while the Slick-away is to come up four days later, and the Sagamore on April 26, or three days before the Blue Grass Stakes.
