WOMEN OWNERS DERBY HOPES Thirteen of Fair Sex Own Candidates for Sixty-Third Renewal. Mrs. Ethel V. Mars Heads List With Five Eiigibles No Sir Mary Hirschs Representative. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 9. Chances of a member of the fairer sex winning the 1937 renewal of the Kentucky Derby were greatly enhanced with the arrival of Miss Mary Hirsch, who has definite designs on the famous Churchill Downs race with No Sir. Miss Hirsch, the first woman in American racing history to be granted a trainers license, revealed her intentions in a letter requesting reservations at the Churchill Downs spring meeting for ten horses, including No Sir. Needless to say her request was granted. Miss Hirschs father, the veteran Max Hirsch, saddled Morton L. Schwartz Bold Venture for his memorable victory in last years Derby. While the senior Hirsch has no entrant in this years renewal, he is expected to be on hand in an advisory capacity in the event his daughter brings No Sir up to his Churchill Downs engagement in the same top form he displayed in finishing second to Court Scandal in the Flamingo Stakes at Hialeah Park. FIVE MARS CANDIDATES. Feminine patrons hold an unusually strong Derby hand this year. With Mrs. Ethel V. Mars represented by five candidates, Miss Hirsch by No Sir and Mrs. Payne Whitneys Greentree Stable with four eiigibles, it isnt difficult to picture one of their number in the coronation stand accepting the winners gold trophy from Col. Matt J. Winn on May 8. All told, thirteen women subscribed to the Derby this year. Between them they nominated twenty three-year-olds to the 0,000 Downs fixture. The Mars quintet, of course, heads the list, with the Milky Way Stable owner, having excellent support for Reaping Reward, with Case Ace, Jawbreaker, Military and Murph. Next are Mrs. Whitneys Greentree four of Chicolorado, Eli Yale, Forty Winks and Tattered. Other candidates owned by women are Mrs. Isabclle D. Sloanes Royal Reigh, Mrs. G. J. Chatvaires Papenie, Mrs. F. A. Clarkes Night Bud, Mrs. H. C. Herndons Josh, Mrs. W. H. Fursts Gerald, Mrs. C. Gregorys Dead Calm, Mrs. G. W. Lofts Mosawtre, Mrs. Frank L. Navins Kermay, Mrs. Louise Viaus Rex Flag and Mrs. H. C. Phipps Melodist. Mrs. Navin is the widow of the late owner of the Detroit Baseball Club. Only recently has she branched out into thoroughbred racing in an elaborate way. LADY OWNERS PREVAIL. Sportswomen have played a most important part in the making of Kentucky Derby history in recent years. Since 1924, when Mrs. R. M. Hoots Black Gold roughed it to the winning wire, three other members of the sex have proved the old maxim "the female of the specie is more deadly than the male." Mrs. John Hertz duplicated Mrs. Hoots feat with Reigh Count in 1928, and Mrs. Payne Whitney supplied one of the outstanding winners of the century in Twenty Grand In 1930. Cavalcade registered No. 4 to make Mrs. Sloane the proudest woman in the sports world with victory in 1934. If the cycle of the last nine years keeps step, 1937 is destined to prove another year for members of the fairer sex.
