This colt had a busy and quite successful career as a two-year-old, with eight victories out of twenty-three starts. He won five stakes at Saratoga, including the rich Hopeful. He is quoted at 30-1 in the Kentucky Derby future book. By NOBRIS ROYDEN Just about the busiest of the better two-year-olds last season was Maedic, brown son Bostonian Little Fire, by Campfire, in the Maemere Farm stable of DeWitt Page. Maedic started twenty-three times, racing from the middle of January until well into October, with but little time off. During this long campaign Maedic developed gradually and he was unbeatable at Saratoga, where he won all his five starts all stakes. No other two-year-old not even Man o War ever has been able to gain such an achievement at the famous track nestling in the Adirondacks. Maedic made seven starts of three furlongs each at Hialeah Park, winning two of them, finishing second twice and third once before his engagements in the Nursery Stakes and Hialeah Juvenile Championship Stakes. He was unplaced In both, as he was two sprints of four furlongs each at Tropical Park. In his first outing in the North, Maedic was entered to be claimed for ,000 and was unplaced, the race being at four and one-half furlongs over the straight course at Belmont Park. He then was a badly beaten second to Knight Gallant in an overnight event and was unplaced in the Juvenile Stakes at the same track. He indicated mud-running ability in his next outing, in which he raced five furlongs in :58 in the slop at Aqueduct to defeat some fair juveniles, including Sophia Tucker. This prompted his stable to send him to Suffolk Downs for the Mayflower Stakes, which was taken by Airflame. He finished fourth, never proving troublesome. Returning to Aqueduct, Maedic displayed improvement to take third place back of Fairy Hill and War Admiral in the Great American Stakes, a six furlongs affair in which he advanced gradually through the stretch. Then at Empire City Maedic was second to Billionaire in the Wakefield Handicap, a dash of about six furlongs in which he made up ground near the end, losing by a length and one-half. Maedic found himself at Saratoga, where the track undoubtedly also was to his liking. On opening day he led most of the way, drawing out in the final furlong to take the Flash Stakes by three lengths over Swiftply. In the Saratoga Sales Stakes, which, like the Flash, was at five and one-half furlongs, the Bostonian colt came from behind willingly in the stretch to defeat No Sir by a length and one-half as Goldey F. was third and John P. War four. The Sanford, at six furlongs, marked his third Saratoga victory. He rushed up on the final turn to assume the lead at the furlong post and drew out thereafter to gain a length verdict over Third Count, with Privileged third and No Sir fourth. Muddy going prevailed for the Grand Union Hotel Stakes, and after being taken back on the turn, he moved forward with determination to score easily by two lengths over his stablemate, Traulove, with Grand Play third and No Sir fourth. With a sloppy track prevailing for the Hopeful, at six and one-half furlongs, Maedic was installed the favorite. Under his weight of 122 pounds he held a contending position until half-way around the turn as Billionaire set a fast pace. He moved up steadily to overtake the Bradley colt soon after passing the furlong post and drew out to triumph by five lengths. Tedious was third and Sir Damion fourth among the nine good youngsters comprising the field for this rich and important event. Lacking engagements at Belmont Park, he tried for the Eastern Shore Handicap at Havre de Grace, in which he was assigned top weight of 126 pounds. The assignment appeared a bit too stiff for him and he tired in the stretch, running fifth back of War Admiral, Orientalist, Rex Flag and Bottle Cap. He completed his two-year-old campaign by running fourth in the Remsen Handicap at Jamaica, in which he also had up top weight of 126, giving sixteen pounds to the victorious Clodion. After a let-up of a couple, of months Maedic resumed training, with the Flamingo Stakes as his objective. He caught a heavy track in his first start at Hialeah Park and came from far back on the extreme outside to nose out Log in a mile dash as Bernard F. was third and Court Scandal fourth. In the Flamingo, however, he gave a performance far below his best form. Maedic was a bargain yearling, costing ,550 and winning 1,675 as a two-year-old. He was bred by Alex Gordon, being by Bostonian, which last year had the highest percentage of stayers. His dam, Little Fire, was by Campfire, from a daughter of Star Ruby, next dam by Glenelg. This is staying blood throughout, and Maedic has the lines of a stayer. If he has not been burned out by too much racing he should go far in three-year-old campaigning, especially if he finds mud on numerous occasions.
