FINAL DERBY GALLOPS Reaping Reward Concludes Training for 5,000 Arlington Race. Works One Mile and an Eighth in 1:53 With Military as Companion Heelfly Impresses. ARLINGTON, Texas, April 14. With a majority of the leading eligibles for Saturdays renewal of the 5,000 added Texas Derby finishing their final stiff preparations for the nine furlongs journey over a fast track at Arlington Downs this morning, only the customary "blowouts" are needed before the nine or more three-year-olds line up for the Southwests richest spring feature, which will have an important bearing on the Kentucky Derby. Although Milky Way Farms Reaping Reward, winter book choice for the Kentucky Derby, has been considered a doubtful starter, trainer Robert McGarvey intimated that the son of Sickle will fill his engagement when he worked nine furlongs this morning. Accompanied by Military and under the direction of L. Malear, his regular exercise boy, Reaping Reward negotiated the distance in 1:53. Harry Hamilton piloted Military, and the St. Germans colt went head-and-head with his more illustrious stable-mate, with Reaping Reward gaining a neck decision at the end. McGarvey has stated that Military will be the chief reliance should muddy footing prevail. HEELFLY BRILLIANTLY. The drill was not as brilliant as Heelflys, which turned the same distance in 1:51. The home-bred son of Royal Ford Canfli took more kindly to his work with blinkers removed from his equipment and he was well In hand throughout. To say trainer Jack Pryce was more than pleased with the trial would be putting it mildly. The colt, which was handled by Arthur Craig, worked alone, and he cooled out in superb fashion. Pryce has not favored blinkers, but as the colt worked and raced in them last year, he Continued on twenty-third page. FINAL DERBY GALLOPS Continued from first rtage. believed in using the "rogues badge" until the Waggoner racer met defeat. The next-best work of the morning was turned in by W. C. Stroubes Sun Pilot, which was timed nine furlongs in 1:53. He will fill his engagement only in the event of a fast track. Robert L., which defeated Mars Shield and Heelfly in the Trial Purse, went the same distance in 1:55, and Mrs. Tom Marshalls Palan traveled the mile and one-eighth in 1:56. That Mrs. V.Wyse will have an entry in the race appeared certain, when Gallant Eagle, which finished fourth to Eastport, his stablematc, in the Arkansas Derby, went a handy mile in 1:40. Dead Calm and Tryanhurry had their final long preparations yesterday and Monday. The former turned in a brilliant trial yesterday morning, and Tryanhurry worked an easy nine furlongs Monday. MILKY WAY ELIGIBLES. The Milky Way eligibles were the first on the track, trainer McGarvey bringing the pair out around 7 oclock. After their customary gallop they began their tasks from the sixteenth post and worked back to the stand. The quarter was timed in :24, the half in :49, three-quarters in 1:13 and the mile in 1:40. Robert L., whose fractions were :25, :49, 1:15 and 1:42, was the next to be called upon, and then trainer Pryce sent out Heel-fly. The Waggoner home-bred appeared perfectly at ease and, displaying his brilliant speed, he went the quarter in :23, the half in :47, three-quarters in 1:12 and the mile in 1:38. He was timed the seven-eighths in 1:25, which called upon him to cover his final quarter in :26. Gallant Eagle started from the mile post and, going along at an even pace and joined by Lightheeled during the final three-eighths, he was timed the quarter in :24, half mile in :48 and three-quarters in 1:13. Palana fractions were :25, :51, 1:17 and 1:44, and was under a strong hand ;:de during the final half mile. Under Lawrence McDermott and a mild drive throughout. Sun Pilot ran the quarter in :24, half mile in :49, three-quarters in 1:14 and the mile in 1:40. MANY RESERVATIONS. Requests for reservations in the clubhouse continue to pour In on the turf catering company, and Jerry Jarl, who handles the details in connection with the memberships and box seats, reports a demand for these choice accommodations. , With a continuance of the fine weather, track superintendent Jack Hayes is work- ing an augmented crew in an effort to have the track at its best and in tkffc eevnt the track mark of 1:50 established by Navanod last fall probably will be equalled or fractured. William H. Shelley, racing secretary and handicapper for the Texas Jockey Club, paid tribute to former victors in the previous runnings of the Texas Derby when hi named races for Bobsled, Plight, Roman Soldier and the 1936 winner, The Fighter, on his program for Saturdays Derby Day. "Well have one of the grandest programs of the year on Derby Day," declared judge Shelley. The probable starting field for the Texas Derby, with weights and jockeys, follows: Horse. Wt. Jockey.
