1 J j i ; . j ; , j CHIGRE IN FINE FETTLE Works Mile in 1:44 Before Being Transferred to Keeneland Park. Sceneshifter and Fencing in Good Gallops Before Rain Changes Track Conditions at Churchill Downs. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 14 Chigre, Louisville-owned candidate for the Kentucky Derby, which will carry the colors of Hamilton C. Applegate in the 0,000 added feature at Churchill Downs on May 8, received his last long prep at Douglas Park this morning before being transferred to Keeneland. The son of Peter Hastings breezed an impressive mile under the direction of his trainer, J. P. Jones, and his owner, and tomorrow is to be sent to the Lexington track, where he is tentatively scheduled to be seen under colors in the Faraway Purse on Saturday, the first day of the Keeneland season. Chigre, whose training progress has attracted many followers, was breezed eight furlongs over a fast track, but through a light drizzle, in 1:4454, and he accomplished the task in a fashion to leave little doubt as to his fitness for competition. While Jones and Applegate hope to start their Derby hope on Saturday, they indicated they would only do so if the Keeneland track is in good condition. If it is not, they will select another race later in the meeting for Chigres three-year-old debut. FINE PERFORMANCE. Displaying an eagerness to show a higher degree of speed, Chigre went his first quarter in :24, half mile in :49?4, three-quarters in 1:16, and seven furlongs in 1:29 in a fine effort. As Chigre stands out as the sole Louisville hope for the Derby, his success or failure at Lexington will be watched with interest by local turf enthusiasts. Light drizzles which fell earlier in the morning with no effect on either the Douglas Park or Churchill Downs tracks became a steady rain later and, as a result, training operations were considerably curtailed. Before track conditions changed at the Downs, Earl Sande had Col. H. Maxwell Howards Sceneshifter and Fencing on the track for a half-mile spin which was accomplished handily in :48, the quarter in :23. The pair broke at the half-mile pole and worked to the stand and were kept on even terms throughout. Carl S., James Chesneys Derby eligible, and Professor Paul, his nominee for the Clark Handicap, which will feature the first days program here on May 1, went a handy mile together in 1:45. Carl S. is not seriously regarded as a Derby starter, but he worked eight furlongs in creditable fashion nevertheless. Little was asked of the remaining Derby horses here, and those which did not get on to the track for training before a steady rain began were confined to their barns for lighter exercise.
