THREE -YEAR -OLD PROSPECTS OF 1937 WAR ADMIRAL, brown colt, by Man o War Brushup; property of Glen JUddle Farms of Samuel D. Riddle. He is one of the favorites; for the Kentucky Derby, none of the future books on the big race; holding him lightly. The latest odds quoted on the son of the mighty Man o War is 15-1. By NOBKIS BOYDEN . . . Possessing an Impressive record of performances at five and six furlongs, War Admiral Is one of the most talked-about candidates for three-year-old honors, particularly because he is a son of Man o War. With this brown colt the Glen Riddle Farm stable of Samuel D. Riddle hopes to make good Its first attempt at winning a Kentucky Derby. War Admiral, lacking the customary sire of Man o Wars get but a well-made colt nevertheless, made his debut at Havre de Grace in April with a nose victory over Sonny Joe in a maiden event at four and one-half furlongs, but thi3 performance apparently was not given much credit as he held at odds of 10 to 1 in his next start nearly a month later at Belmont Park. In this dash of five furlongs straightaway, War Admiral displayed excellent speed all the way, running the distance in :58, to triumph by two lengths over Scintillator as Papenie was third and Exhort fourth. The Glen Riddle colt was given strong support consequently in the National Stallion Stakes, but his very creditable effort could not give him better than third honors back ot Pompoon and Fencing, while Black Look was fourth. He was a factor all the way in the five furlongs event and was beaten only two and a half lengths. Several weeks later he made the pace in the Great American Stakes until giving way to Fairy Hill in the final furlong of the three-quarters race, losing out by a length and a half while finishing ahead of several other good youngsters including Alaedic, which waa just coming around to his best form. Illness overtook him soon after and he was not able to take up the colors again for more than two and a half months. Trainer George Conway had War Admiral in excellent fettle for his return, and tho brown colt made a runaway of the Eastern Shore Handicap after getting away to an excellent start. With 118 pounds on his back, the Glen Riddle colt stepped the six furlongs in 1:11 to score by five lengths over Orientalist as Rex Flag was third, BotUe Cap fourth and Maedic fifth among the fifteen starters. Asked to shoulder 124 pounds and the favorite in the Richard Johnson Stakes, War Admiral was beaten a length and a half by Bottle Cap. The track was muddy for thia six furlongs dash at Laurel and War Admiral was away smartly, but Bottle Cap slipped through on the inside leaving the backstretch to open up a lead of two lengths, but the Man o War colt gained on. the son of Bostonian towards the end. War Admiral did no more racing as a juvenile, moving to the Glen Riddle wintering quarters at Berlin, Maryland, where he is said to have benefitted splendidly from , his long rest. Greater size and ruggedness will stand him in good stead in hi3 efforts over the longer distances as a three-year-old. The Glen Riddle colt should get both speed and stamina from his sire, while his dam, Brushup, by Sweep, was a half-sister to War Glory, a son of Man o War, which was Just about the best three-year-old of the 1933 season. He also is bred similarly to War Hero, which stayed well enough to win a Saratoga Cup. War Admiral needs only this ability to go a distance to make a powerful bid for three-year-old honors.
