JUSTA PLAY sprinted into a clear lead entering the back stretch, was rated until challenged, rallied to pressure and held on stoutly to the close. PRETTYLASS worked her way forward on the outside, responded to punishment and finished determinedly in the final drive. LETTER BOX, slow to settle into her best stride, closed with a belated rush in the last half mile. FREDALVA raced prominently for seven-eighths, then tired gradually. TIEMPO could not engage the leaders. CAPT. JERRY, well placed early, faltered when the real test came. FLYING FEATHERS was never a factor. SIEMPRE showed a flash. of early speed. FAIR TIME, outrun for the first half mile, circled to the outside when making a strong bid, closed stoutly and came out slowly after wearing the leaders down midway of the stretch. SIR ROSE, prominent all the was-, responded to punishment and fought it out stoutly. MERRILY ON worked his way up between horses to enter a forward position, challenged gamely when reaching the stretch and finished courageously. BRISTLE, forced to race on the outside after being outpaced, came with a bold rush in the closing drive. SKYRIDE forced a steady pace while racing with BARN STORMER and tired in the final eighth. ITSIE BITSIE raced evenly. BARN STORMER showed good speed, but was done after a half mile. BLAKEEN tired after three-eighths. The others were held safe. Scratched 39832 Lady Carrot. 107. BILL DONOGIIUE hustled into a contending position, came through on the inside to wear down GRAND DUKE, withstood a stout drive and outstayed SAGE GIRL. The latter followed close to the leaders early and finished resolutely under a hard drive. GRAND DUKE had good speed while setting the pace, but tired slowly after being overhauled. MASKED GAL, away slower than usual, closed full of run between horses in the last quarter mile. LADFIELD raced evenly. SCUDDER was held safe. GOOD FLAVOR was outrun. AROUSED tired. WHOPPER hustled away from the gate, took a short lead in the run for the first turn, was expertly rated in front throughout to shake off challenges from WHITE COCKADE and DARK HOPE, saved ground on the turns and lasted under strong handling. NEW DEAL, under restraint while being reserved close to the leaders, responded stoutly to urging through the stretch and was wearing the winner down in the drive while bearing out at the end. WHITE COCKADE, in hand closest to the leader until entering the stretch, held on well, but was not good enough. DARK HOPE, always in a contending position, made a bold challenge in the stretch, but hung slightly in the drive. COLUMBIANA lacked early speed and failed to respond when called upon; she was never a contender. CHANCE RAY quit. The others were outrun. Scratched 40033 Floradora, 110; 40033Kenty, 94. COUNT TETRARCH, prominent in the early running, drove through on the inside of HEADIN HOME midway of the final turn, saved much ground and had something in reserve at the close. HEADIN HOME, in much trouble going to the first turn, was sent into the lead rapidly midway of the back stretch, bore out entering the stretch after being overhauled and barely lasted long enough to outstay KOTERITO. The latter moved up stoutly rounding the final tum after being rated off the pace, but hung during the final drive. BLACK MISCHIEF could not menace. TRAGEDIAN was done early. The latter had good speed to set the early pace, saved ground throughout, but could not withstand the bid of the winner. POPO moved into closer contention alter a half mile and finished very fast. DAFFY raced evenly and finished stoutly, MR. MARVEL quit. ADAMITE could not better his position. MINNA was never a contender. Scratched 40035 Deanin, 114.
