THREE -YEAR -OLD PROSPECTS OF 1937 BILLIONAIRE, brown colt, by Black Toney Forteresse, by Sardana-pale; property of E. R. Bradleys Idle Hour Farm, of Lexington-, Ky. He is a brother of Brokers Tip, winner of the 1933 Kentucky Derby. Bred to stay as well as run fast, Billionaire, should be a worthy jpartner "- to hs rnore. famous stable cohipanion, Brooklyn.- r. By.NOB.KIS HOYDEN - , - - - - " Col. Edward R. Bradley limy be pinning his hopes on,his fifth Kentucky Derby; victory in Brooklyn, but. hef ha another beJtter-than-aYerage . prospect in Billionaire,; which went against the best woiyear-dlds throughout Tlat season, and scored his most important victory in hev Wakefield Handicap.. jit Empire, .City. Billionaire, a son; of Black Toney and Forteresse; by Sardatiapale, .lk. a brother to Brokers Tip, , but he - bad all of the early speed that that Derby .winner his only victory lacked. Billionaire--won at the second asking at Churchill Downs last May, but didnt have much chance in the large field-that contested the running, of the Bashford Manor Stakes. He weakened in his first appearance at Belmont Park, but- benefited sufficiently to capture his next effort, iri which he ran the five furlongs straightaway in j59. to easily defeat Mahdi, Rockwood and Court Scandal among others. In the Juvenile Stakes the Bradley colt, gave an excellent account .of himself, although weakening near- the end to be beaten a length- by Scintillator. Apogee ran second, while Airflame was alongside of him in fourth place. He likewise- shortened stride in the running of the Tremont, after being up with the early pace, and ran unplaced as Airflame took the verdict Resting for several weeks. Billionaire came back at Empire City to take an overnight dash at the direct expense of Talked About, Merry Maker and Swiftply, and this was followed by his Wakefield triumph. In this dash of five and three-quarters furlongs, the son of Black Toney led all the way to win by a length and a half over Maedic, with Flying Trapeze third and Top Radio fourth. Idle for more than a month, Billionaire returned to the wars at Saratoga to step six furlongs in 1:12, which was as fast as two-year-olds ran at the resort course last season, to score by five lengths over Traulove, with Flying Scot third and Case Ace fourth. This marked the first defeat of Case Ace and he was retired for the year a few days later. On the basis of that performance. Billionaire became the favorite for the Hopeful ; Stakes and only a change in the track condition favorable to Maedic caused him to pass J that honor to the- Maemere Farm colt. Johnny Gilbert hustled Billionaire into an j immediate lead in the Hopeful, but Maedic came on with too strong a rush in. the stretch to earn the victory. Behind the Bradley colt were such as Tedious and Sir Damion. Billionaire qualified for the Belmont Futurity by running six furlongs in 1:10 over the straight course in his next start, his victims including John P. War, Zostera and Mosawtre. In the Futurty the brother to Brokers Tip fought bitterly for early J leadership, but he flattened out in the final quarter to finish back in the pack, although 1 but seven lengths away from Pompoon. Doing no more racing for a month. Billionaire closed his season in the Pirrilico Futurity, j in which he set the pace until giving way to Privileged in the stretch. Winding up in fourth position, beaten two and a half lengths, he got third money when J Privileged was disqualified, giving Matey first money and Brooklyn the second award. Billionaire Is a fine type of thoroughbred, and he has the breeding to go a distance. His J sire has sired many good horses in this country, while Sardanapale has proven one of the best brood mare sires the world has ever known. However, he weakened in too many of his races last season to be expected to develop into a first class three-year-old 1 unless his trainer, H. J". Thompson, has found the cause and will be able to correct it - Domino..... J Himyar MannieGray EmmaC...
