WORK OUT DESPITE MUD Bernard F., Gerald, Howard Pair and No Sir Given Trials. Bernard F. in Best Display of Morning Reaping Reward and Military Idle Track Improves. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 22. Nearly all of the prominent eligibles here were on the course at Churchill Downs this morning for work of some sort, in spite of the muddy track, which held no terrors for trainers of Kentucky Derby candidates. Reaping Reward and Military, the mainstays of the Milky Way Farm, were inactive as far as workouts were concerned. They engaged in short gallops Wednesday. I. J. Collins Bernard F., Mrs. W. H. Fursts Gerald, Col. H. Maxwell Howards Sceneshifter and Fencing and Miss Mary Hirschs No Sir were seen in useful efforts. The most ambitious trial wan indulged in by Bernard F., which traveled three-quarters in 1:48 in the best performance of the morning. Trainer Al Miller worked the Collins three-year-old in company with Erins Son, which, however, began to drop behind his more fashionable stablemate after going about half of the distance. Bernard F. went his first quarter in :21 and the half mile in :51 and was hard held all the way. Erins Sons time for the six furlongs was 1:21. LIKES A FAST TRACK. Although Bernard F. can run creditably in the mud, he is more partial to fast footing and in light of that fact his effort this morning was particularly notable. Jockey Jack Westrope, who will have the mount on him in the Derby, was astride Gerald in his half-mile breeze. The Furst colt was not permitted to extend himself and in little more than a gallop he went the four furlongs in :56. Trainer Williams said that he intended to give Gerald a more strenuous workout tomorrow morning, perhaps over a mile. No Sir also traveled a mile and he was accompanied by Charmed Circle. Together, under the direction of Miss Hirsch, they ran the first quarter mile in :25 and the full distance in :52, and the Derby hope also went along in most handy fashion. The works which trainer Earl Sande gave Sceneshifter and Fencing were designed as "openers" for long trials tomorrow if the track is not too tough. Sande indicated he would send the two at least a mile tomorrow and possibly a little farther. They went along on even terms this morning and negotiated three furlongs in :38, the quarter in :25... CLARK HANDICAP PROBABLES. Two nominees and probable starters for the 0,000 added Clark Handicap, feature of the opening day program on May 1, were among the many more horses which were seen on the track this morning. They were the Millsdale Stables Infantry and I. J. Col- Continued on twenty-fourth page. WORK 0UTDESP1TE MUD Continued from first page. lins Paradisical. The latter went three-quarters in 1:22 and Infantry five furlongs in 1:04, both working handily. Infantry traveled In the company of Grey Count, also owned by the Mlllsdale Stable and which is being pointed for the Aurora Derby. Although the track was muddy this morning, the weather was pleasant and as a brisk wind blew most of the day there was a strong chance that the track would be in good condition tomorrow.
