PALAN GETS CLOSE DECISION Marshall Representative Up in Final Few Strides to Beat Patrolite. Neck Margin Separates Fair In Arlington Downs Attraction Miss Georgette Wins at First Asking. ARLINGTON, Texas, April 22. In another of the many upsets of a well-balanced program offered by the Texas Jockey Club at its Arlington Downs course this afternoon, Mrs. Tom Marshalls Palan was a driving winner of the Marshall Purse, which attracted a small field of five three-year-olds over the Waggoner course of six and one-half furlongs. W. C. Stroubes Patrolite was second and Three Ds Stock Farms Pansys First third. Play Pal, an even money choice and the fifth favorite to meet defeat, was fourth, and then came Winged Victory, a Milky Way Farm cast-off. Ideal weather prevailed but the track was , still a little off and was classified as "good." Jack Dempsey, former heavyweight champion, witnessed the running of the feature from the stewards stand. Roy Dickcrson got the five away immediately and although the winner was the first under way he was unable to keep up with Pansys First, which was rushed into command on the inside and Patrolite, which went out with her. Before reaching the main course the winner was a distant trailer and Pansys First had attained a clear lead." Approaching the final quarter. Play Pal moved into third place but the winners margin, was only a head and drove past him before reaching the final furlong. At that stage Patrolite forged to the front but Grill was bringing Palan up rapidly and responding to the lads strong urging, he reached the lead in the final few strides to be a neck before Patrolite at the end. The latter beat Pansys First by half a length but some three lengths separated Pansys First and Play Pal. DROPS FROM CONTENTION. After five-sixteenths Winged Victory dropped out of contention and Play Pal was some three lengths before him. Under 109 pounds, seven more than that carried by Patrolite and six more than Pansys First, Palan ran the distance in 1:20. Winged Victory and Play Pal shouldered the top imposts of 112 pounds each. A. J. Schuetz, Houston patron, sent out a speedy miss in the Arlington Heights Purse, fourth and secondary attraction, when the well-bred Miss Georgette sped over the four and a half furlongs on a track classified as "good" in the sparkling time of :55 to win easily over Three Ds Stock Farms Liberty Flight, Carefully and four other youngsters. Miss Georgette took command at once and went into a good lead during the opening five-sixteenths. Liberty. Flight was in second place, with Pripo and Carefully racing head and head and well before the others. After swinging a trifle wide at the stretch turn, the winner swerved slightly to the inside when Richard attempted to straighten her, but she came on to have a three lengths advantage over Liberty Flight at the end. Some five lengths separated Liberty Flight and Carefully, with Pripo well before the others. Sun Victor, a winner of his previous start and a heavily supported second choice, showed nothing to justify his strong backing. Despite being greatly benefited when permitted to carry a majority of her opponents wide at the far turn and allowed to pursue a weaving course in the drive, Little Cleora was unable to withstand Jack Carters Hearty, which got up in the final stride of the mile and seventy yards first race to beat her by a nose. Doctor C. N., a heavily supported choice, was third, two and one-half lengths back of Little Cleora and three lengths before West Wichita, which was easily best of three other three-year-olds. WEARS DOWN LEADER. Always in closest pursuit of Little Cleora, Hearty steadily wore Little Cleora down in the drive and steered to the outside of her when she was sent to the rail. He got up to gain the decision in a picture finish. High Bottom made good at his first asking under Mrs. William Emersons colors when he turned back My Bow, Bonnie Pan, the favorite, and Teeter Totter, which came in for strong backing in the second race, at three-quarters. Never far back while Bonnie Pan, Lady Chiniquy, My Bow and Parisian Witch dominated the pace, the winner forged to the front in the final sixteenth to lead My Bow by a length at the end. The latter beat the tiring Bonnie Pan by a head for second, while Teeter Totter came again after being forced wide at the stretch turn. Aurangzeb completed a double for the Jack Carter establishment when he accounted for the third race. Gay Bill was second and Donnacona Kid third. Well ridden by Fisher and saving ground when improving his position, Aurangzeb was sent to the outside of Gay Bill approaching the stretch and despite being carried wide when Gay Bill bore out in the final furlong he came to the end three-quarters of a length before him. The latter was only a neck before the fast finishing Donnacona Kid which led Old State by a length for third honors.
