BAY MEADOWS OPENING NEAR Brilliant Field of Sprinters Assured for Initial Feature. Boxthorn, Brown Jade, War Glory, Sobriety, Wise Alibi and Lady Florlse Among Eligibles. SAN MATEO, Calif., April 22. Bay Meadows inaugural stake feature Saturday will present a brilliant field of sprinters. This was assured today when nominations of fourteen top-notch horses were received for the Speed Handicap, a six furlongs race for a purse of ,500 added. A complete list of nominations will not be available until later and it is likely others will be among the sprinters asking for weights. Already named for competition in the opening day feature are Brown Jade, Box-thorn, War Glory, Sobriety, Fair Lead, Cloud DOr, Faust, Exhibit, Happy Bolivar, Mad Joss, Wise Alibi, Lady Florise, Lt. Greenock and San Luis Rey. Brown Jade, the sensational California filly owned by William Le Baron, Hollywood movie producer, is endowed with intense speed and is regarded as one of the states best thoroughbreds produced in recent years. With two victories at Tanforan to her credit. Brown Jade returns to a track much to her liking, having raced six furlongs in 1:10, flat, at the fall Bay Meadows meeting. Boxthorn, the former Bradley star and once a Kentucky Derby favorite, is expected to find the fast and firm Bay Meadows track more to his fancy than the slow footing at Tanforan when he lost to Exhibit. War Glory carries the silks of Mrs. Frank Carreaud and Is a former handicap star of New York tracks. He is a son of Man o War and is making good in a comeback attempt. Exhibit is a stablemate of Seabiscuit, being owned by Mrs. Charles S. Howard, and with a decided advantage in weights, scored an upset victory over Boxthorn at Tanforan. FAIR LEAD RATED HIGHLY. Fair Lead is one of the leading three-year-olds of the West Coast and is owned by Norman W. Church, of Los Angeles. He recently returned to the races following a rest and is considered a strong contender in the Speed Handicap. Earl Beezley has the only entry among the nominations. Sobriety and Lt. Greenock, being named by the "Miracle Man." Sobriety was recently purchased from the Vanderbilt string and is reported in tip-top form following distance efforts. Cloud DOr is a West Coast favorite, a consistent and dependable sprinter that can give his best effort on any kind of track. He carries the colors of Mrs. W. T. Wes-trope. Faust is an exceptionally well-bred son of Diavolo and Rothermel in the stable of Al Tarn and has yet to run to his best form on the coast. Happy Bolivar has run some of his best races at Bay Meadows and is dangerous in any sprint race. He is a son of the great sprinter, Happy Argo, and is raced by Chief Holmes. Wise Alibi Is a three-year-old recently acquired by C. E. "Boots" Durnell and race3 for the Oakland Stable. Mad Joss is a speedy filly belonging to Maj. R. C. Woodruff of Arizona and is a capable sprinter. Lady Florise, a California filly, is owned by Sam Briskin, of Hollywoods movie colony, and has proved her class on the West Coast.
