PROMISING JUVENILE STRING E. R. Bradley May Send 23 Youngsters to the Races This Year. Older Division of Stable Made Up of Eil-llonair.e, Brooklyn and Four Three-Year-Olds. LEXINGTON, Ky., April 1. The main division of Col. Edward Riley Bradleys sta- hie goes to the races this season in charge of a new trainer, T. J. "Chappie" Hastings, who succeeded to the post upon the death last fall of H. J. Thompson, and it also will leave Idle Hour Farm, without a candidate for the Kentucky Derby. Not in two decades has the Bradley stable been without a Derby candidate, but none of the current three- year-olds held sufficient promise to be even nominated for the Churchill Downs classic. In his first year as the chief Bradley men-tor, Hastings, who was assistant to Thomp- son for a long period and handled Blue Larkspur for his achievements in the With- ers, Belmont and Arlington Classic Stakes, will find it almost completely necessary to depend on the two-year-olds to develop an outstanding performer, as the pair of four-year-olds and quartet of three-year-olds in his charge will require considerable improvement to move into the higher brackets. The four-year-olds are Billionaire and Brooklyn, both of which were in training during 1937, with only the former being returned a winner. Billionaire was able to win three overnight races, while Brooklyn was unable to win in four starts. Both horses have wintered well and may prove more useful during the coming season. Babys Breath, Born Ruler, Born Wise and Buddy Travers are the three-year-olds in the care of Hastings. WELL-BRED PROSPECTS. Some fine looking as well as well-bred prospects are included in the twenty-three juveniles, names for all of which have been approved by The Jockey Club. They include Balmy Spring, a full brother to Blue Larkspur, and Big Hurry, a full sister to Black Helen. A colt and a filly from among the last crop of foals by North Star III. are also in the group being prepared over the private track at Idle Hour by trainer Hastings. The colt, which has been named Boy Plunger, is one of the best looking members of the stable. Under the present schedule, Hastings will depart with the Bradley horses for Belmont . Park about May 1. He has been going along slowly with his charges and may start only a few of them at Keeneland. The master of Idle Hour also has eight horses in the care of William Hurley, who also is conditioning Algeria for Mrs. Charles F. Sheldon. This division was in Florida this winter and is due for campaigning in Maryland this spring. JUVENILE BAND.
