I I THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1938 CANT WAIT, chestnut colt, by Victorian Winged Bee; property of Myron Selznick. Trained by W. W. Taylor. By NORRIS ROYDEN On one race alone, Cant Wait could be classified as one of the ranking prospects for three-year-did racing this season, but the son of Victorian and Winged Bee, by Infinite, went to California this winter in quest of the Santa Anita Derby and failed to win in five starts. The victory which brought Myron Selznick, motion picture producer and newcomer to racing, so much, pleasure was achieved in the Junior Champion Stakes, one of the most important two-year-old stakes in the country. Cant Wait not only won this dash of six and one-half furlongs, but he did it in a manner to make the experts take unusual notice. He was not eligible to any of the futurities, so the Selznick colt was put away until beginning his Santa Anita campaign. Cant Wait made his debut at Santa Anita as a two-year-old, but started only twice, running second to Supremist in his second effort. Moving to Jamaica, he could do no better than run third to Ed Sullivan and Papa Jack in a maiden race, so he was entered in a claiming race next time out with a valuation of ,000. This was at Belmont Park and Cant Wait failed badly, whereupon he was entered to be claimed for ,000 when next sporting silks, this time at Aqueduct. The son of Victorian began to find himself and he ran the five furlongs in :59 to win easily. A week later he was jumped to a valuation of ,500 and again the Selznick colt rvomped away from his field, doing the distance .in :59. Taken out of the claiming ranks, Cant Wait added his third straight at Aqueduct easily at the direct expense of Wise Mentor, even though he encountered a muddy track-for the first time. Not having any engagements at Saratoga, Cant Wait was given a vacation during July and August, returning to competition on the last day of the latter month as racing returned to Aqueduct. This proved to be his toughest assignment yet, and he was outrun in the early stages, but the son of Victorian came on to win going away over Regal Sun and Short Notice in the excellent time of :58 for the five furlongs. Entering stakes competition for the first time in the Babylon Handicap, at six furlongs, Cant Wait had to be content with fourth honors, two lengths back of Redbreast, as Mountain Ridge was second and Chaps third. Well up early, he dropped back in the stretch and came again towards the end. That performance must have proven beneficial to him because in the Junior Championship five days later, Cant Wait was on top of the pace from the start and went to the front inside the final furlong to draw away until he was a half-dozen lengths ahead of Fighting Fox, while Redbreast was third, Chaps fourth and Tiger well back in the ruck. He carried 114 pounds and ran the six and one-half furlongs in 1:18, which is first-class time for Aqueduct, whether turned in by an old horse or a two-year-old. At Santa Anita the Selznick colt was fourth in his first start at six furlongs, Sun Egret winning and then, well beaten in the San Vicente Handicap at six furlongs, the A. C. Compton colorbearer also proved victorious as the track was slow. Displaying considerable improvement, Cant Wait was nosed out by Stagehand in his next outing, which was at one mile in slow going. The two colts battled practically on even terms all through the stretch, but Cant Wait couldnt quite hold Maxwell Howards now famous star, to which he was granting six pounds. Behind them were Dauber and Kings Heir among others. In the Santa Anita Derby, Cant Wait hardly had a chance, and he finished the mile and a furlong event well back. Then, in the Derby Consolation, at a mile and one-sixteenth, he dropped a head decision . to Sir Raleigh, although he was gaining gradually on the latter as they were reaching the wire. He has not raced since. The breeding of. Cant Wait suggests much speed, although- his- sire, Victorian, a son of Whisk Broom TX, was a good winner at a mile and one-quarter. His dam, Winged Bee, is by Infinite, a son of Ultimus, which has gotten mostly fast horses, but the second dam is a sister to the second dam of Bostonian. In fact, Cant Wait combines both the top and bottom lines of that Preakness winner which has sired many stayers, and he possibly may prove a solid stayer, although we have our doubts. f Ben Brush Bramble fBroomstick "S Roseville g LElf : Galliard g Sylvabelle f f Sir Dixon Billet -Audience j Jaconet c jc LSallie McClelland. , Hindoo .2 J I Red-and-BIu" fl f Commando j Domino ,: r. f Peter Pan .-.
