JAMES DOING ROAD WORK SAN MATEO, Calif., April 4. Jockey Basil James, who will be eligible to ride April 12, is putting in some strenuous road work in preparation for his return to saddle duty. The youngster from Sunnyside, Wash., will be a welcome addition to the riding brigade at Bay Meadows. Trainer Earl Sande, conditioner of the Maxwell Howard horses, has a call on James to ride The Chief in the Kentucky Derby, that is, if Sande decides to start the son of Pennant Transit as a running companion to Stagehand.
