MAKE CLASSIC FUTURITY Famous Arlington Park Features Conditions Change After This Year. Expect New Conditions to Increase Gross Value of 1939 Running to Approximately 5,0,00. Conversion of the 0,000 added Classic Stakes, Americas most important mid-summer race for three-year-olds, into a futurity after 1938 a change that should double, perhaps triple, the gross value of the stake was announced by John D. Hertz, chairman of the executive board of the Arlington Park Jockey Club today. Additional fees accruing from the original nomination date of July 15 of this year, when included with the 0,000 added money and starting fees, should raise the gross value of the 1939 running to about 5,000 and the 1940 renewal to approximately 0,000, Hertz estimated. With a gross of 4,900 from entry starting fees and 0,000 in added money, the 1937 Classic Stakes netted the winner, John Hay Whitneys Flying Scot 7,375. A gold replica of the famous Coronation Cup won by Mrs. John D. Hertzs Reigh Count at Epsom Downs in 1929, will be presented for the Classic Stakes. This fourteen karat gold cup will be the most valuable racing trophy in America, said Hertz. It will be a permanent trophy for the race, to be competed for annually and to be held for one year by the winning owner. LIST OF FAMOUS WINNERS. Since it was inaugurated in 1929, famous horses have won the Classic. Among its nine heroes were the three-year-old champions Blue Larkspur 1929, Gallant Fox 1930, Cavalcade 1934, Omaha 1935, and Granville 1936. Three of its winners-Mate 1931 and Gusto 1932 sought international laurels by invading England, as did Reigh Count before the Classic Stakes was established. Personal canvass of the leading breeding farms and racing stables will be made before July 15 to secure the now two-year-olds for the 1939 race and the now yearlings for the 1940 race, said Hertz.
