I . . . . . . . - - . . . j Twenty Years of Future Books on KENTUCKY DERBY and the Results 1928 t.. ....j The names of Reigh Count, Sun Beau, Misstep, Toro, Petee-Wrack, Martie Flynn, Strolling Player, Jack Higgins, Distraction, Typhoon and Vito at this stage of American turf history loom large in retrospect, they were part and parcel of the Kentucky Derby field of 1928 and to many a prejudiced eye only the year of Twenty Grand, Equipoise, Mate, et al, saw a field that even closely approached that group in class. It was, without a dissenting vote, one of the greatest if not the top field of all time that ever assembled for the turfs one-day romah holiday in May in the Queen City of the South. Reigh Count, the Derby winner of that year, making good the publics confidence in him as future book and starting favorite, raced on to international fame by traveling to England to win the Coronation Cup, and missed victory in the Ascot Gold Cup by a short margin, while Sun Beau plodded on through the following years to pile up the tremendous total of 76,744 in money winnings. Sun Beau became the worlds greatest money-winning horse and holds that title today. He was not a great three-year-bid. He was 60 to 1 in the opening line on the Kentucky Derby. Reigh Count was 4. Misstep, the crack Marks , horse everybody could follow because of the wide blaze on his face, missed championship honors only because Reigh Count was out that year. Misstep was 10 to 1, betting odds that indicate a contender. Misstep was all of that. Toro was 20 to 1 and he also was a contender. He was a brilliant three-year-old albeit an unlucky -one. He won Derbys and missed others by inches. The Derby finish was Reigh Count, Misstep and Toro. Sun Beau was present, thats all. He did not figure in the race. The Derby that year was a good betting race because more than fifty per cent of the starters figured to have a chance, some, of them more than a good chance. In addition it was a big field and couplings ; were numerous.
