Here and There on the Turf Futurity Deserves More Support Public Dislikes Straightaway Sande Deserves His New Job Smart Crack Aims for Bemsen No better evidence of the publics dissatisfaction with racing over the straight course at Belmont Park can be found than was available Saturday with the running of the Futurity. A crowd of 25,000 persons was present for the Futurity and its two companion features, the Grand National Steeplechase and Jockey Club Gold Cup, but the latter events had very little to do with bolstering the attendance. because they were farces, just as the public expected them to be, considering their entries. Yet the number of spectators attracted by the Futurity was not nearly as great as might be expected with the race being run over the main course and, in view of the patrons, every step of the way. j Even the finish of Saturdays race left something to be desired because Eight Thirty had appeared the winner to many spectators, but the thrill became an empty one when the photograph showed Porters Mite victorious. Final statistics for the Belmont Park meeting reveal a slight increase in revenue, although the attendance was smaller. The figures could have been considerably more pleasing if the Futurity and every other race for two-year-olds had been staged on the main course. The theory has been advanced that races for juveniles over the straight course are more truly run than those around the turn. We will subscribe to this notion insofar as races over a mile track are concerned, but not for Belmont Parks main course, which is a mile and one half in circumference and whose turns are wide and sweeping. The Futurity, now that it is renewed about October 1 annually, could be increased in distance to seven furlongs or one mile and not be nearly as exacting on its contestants as at present Furthermore, it would be a spectators race. Earl Sandes appointment as a trainer of a division of John Hay Whitneys stable came as something of a surprise, although it had w Continued oh seventeenth page. If Sande has been selected to take over the young stock to carry the C. V. "Whitney colors next season, the news hardly would have been surprising. The former riding j j idol has earned this "promotion" by his 9 handling of Maxwell Howards stable, headed 3 by Stagehand and The. Chief, and, as the 5 Dayton sportsman will continue to have but 7 a few horses, Sande will continue to keep 5 them. Sande plans to winter his entire sta-5 ble at Belmont Park, particularly to give Stagehand and The Chief and himself a much needed vacation. War Admiral was not nominated for any 5 of the autumn stakes in Maryland and the B belief began to grow that Samuel D. Riddle E, intended to retire him following the running 7 of the Jockey Club Gold Cup, but then came 9 the word that Alfred Vanderbilt is making a 7 strong attempt to get him in a race with Seabiscuit at Pimlico. On top of that in-9 formation comes the announcement from Narragansett Park that War Admiral and Seabiscuit as well have been named for two stakes at that point and that George, Conway intends taking his entire stable there for the meeting, opening next week. So, with both War Admiral and Seabiscuit in the Rhode Island Handicap, normally a. 0,000 added event, Narragansett Park will elevate the purse to 5,000 if both horses start. The date for the Rhode Island is November 12, but if Pimlico gets its match between th two stars it will come before that date. T. P. Morgan, the Texas sportsman, whose stable has been doing quite well on the Metropolitan circuit this season, under the direction of Edward L. Snyder,, may have purchased the Remsen Handicap winner when he obtained Smart Crack from W. T. Anderson at a fancy figure a month ago. Mak-. ing her first start for her new owner, the daughter of Kiev and Wise Crack, by Vul-cain, extended her unmarred string of victories to five, in easily taking the secondary feature of Jamaicas inaugural program, and she now will be pointed for the ,000 added Remsen, to be run a week from Saturday. This dash of six furlongs should prove the quality of Smart Crack, as her opponents may include such topnotchers as Johnstown, Roll and Toss, Hants, Maeline and Technician. Jamaica, by way of closing, enjoyed a splendid inaugural and with good weather should have one of its best autumn meetings in years. - - , - f 1 .l1n. if J
