CONQUERS FOURTH STRAIGHT Son of Victorian Leads Throughout in Annapolis Purse. Second Triumph of Day at Laurel for Jockey Johnny Gilbert Clingendaal Finishes in Second Place. LAUREL, Md., Oct. 4. Showing the same gpeed that resulted in victories in his last three starts in the handicap division, Conquer,-five-year-old son of Victorian Note o Love, ran his winning streak to four, in a row twheri he handily defeated five other seasoned performers in the Annapolis Purse, an allowance affair that served as the fifth and best race on the card at Laurel Park today, i Leading the entire distance of a mile and one-sixteenths under his 115 pounds impost, Svhich was top weight of the small party under colors, the Mrs. L. Viau gelding marked iip his eighth victory of the season and the second riding success of the day for jockey J. Gilbert when he drove to the finish two and one-half lengths before A. C. Comptons four-year-old Clingendaal. ! TOP HEAVY CHOICE. Conquer ruled a top-heavy choice for the Jnile nd one-sixteenth race, which was- run in 1:441,, and his achievement was one of the most popular of the afternoon. Third in the event went to Bootless, from the E. R. Bradley barn, and Genie Palatine showed the way to Unheralded and Sir Jim James, the only others under silks. In the main race only a half minute delay prevailed before the half dozen starters left the stalls, and it found three of the field Clingendaal, Conquer and Genie Palatine going to the first turn in close order, with the Viau gelding on the inside and capable .of taking a short lead midway on the turn. ;Gilbert had his mount under snug restraint as he led the way, and Clingendaal was also jbeing nursed as he went along in advance of the Mrs. E. Denemark mare. j HOLDS SHORT LEAD. On the far side no change took place among any of the six starters and the pace was a fast one whea Conquer ran the first jBix furlongs in 1:12. With the back stretch :completed and the final turn reached, those iri the rear began moving toward the leaders, but Conquer was still in the van and holding a short lead. Reaching the front stretch ,. Clingendaal .made his final charge at the Viau gelding, and Gilbert shifted his whip to his left hand land gained instant response when he struck the flanks of the Victorian gelding. From the furlong post to the finish Conquer proved master of his persistent rival jand drew away nicely. Bootless was beaten .four lengths for second place and was just a half length before Genie Palatine. i
