SHELLEY CALLED TO CHICAGO Narragansett Park Racing Secretary Also General Manager and Racing Secretary of Sportsmans Park. PAWTUCKET, R. I., Oct. 4. Bob Shelley, who in addition to being racing secretary at Narragansett Park, also serves as general manager and racing secretary at Sportsmans Park, was called to Chicago today to attend a meeting of the corporation and the Illinois Racing Commission. He will re-j main at Sportsmans Park for the opening of the fall meeting on October 10. During his absence, his father, W. A. "Bill" Shelley, will i uphold the family prestige at Narragansett. I The elder Shelley is highly regarded by ! horsemen.. He has been racing secretary- at the famous Churchill Downs for twenty-five years and during that time has handled every Kentucky Derby but one. In 1934 he was confined to his home by illness and young Bob Shelley handled the details of the Derby which was won by Cavalcade. Shelley senior has. been connected with horse racing for forty-six years and has served as an official at Oriental Park, Havana, Latonia and other tracks. SECRETARYS STAFF. He will arrive here Monday to assume charge of the secretarys office. Jimmy Ross, "Duke" Dahlstrom and Pop Fisk, of Bob Shelleys staff, are already here lining things up for the fall meeting which starts October 13. Preparations for the meeting are well advanced. Condition books for the first eleven days of the meeting are now in the hands of horsemen. Stall allotment for 1,200 horses have been made and there are already upwards of 300 horses at the track. With the ending of Daylight Saving Time in I Rhode Island next Sunday, it will be neces-i sary to advance the post time for the fall meeting to 1:15. The "Daily Double windows will close at 1 oclock. Narragansett will resume with the same staff of officials that conducted the successful summer meeting.
