LATE CLOSING OF FEATURES Sportsmans Park Headliners Open. Until Two Days Before Running Totalizator Tested and Okayed. CICERO, HI., Oct. 4 Nominations to the richer Saturday features to be run during the Sportsmans Park meeting of nineteen days will not close until two days before their running, a policy which virtually as-, sures large fields for each of them. The first of these better events, the Great Lakes Handicap, to be staged on the first Saturday of the meeting, is a sprint of seven furlongs in which three-year-olds and older horses will vie for a purse of ,200. Entries for this event close on Thursday, October 13, and if the number and caliber of horses on hand awaiting the opening are any indication, the race should draw a smart field. POPULAR DISTANCE. The seven-furlong races are among the most popular Sportsmans Park offerings and the first book, of conditions provides for a number of them in addition to the Great Lakes Handicap. As in all the races run over this popular half-mile course, the fields which take part in the seven-furlong events pass the stands at least twice to the delight of those who like to get a close-up view of their favorites in actfon. Little remains, meanwhile, to be done to have the plant ready for next Mondays opening. Today ijic new totalizator, to be in use here for the first time, was tested and pronounced ready for operation. When racing secretary R. S. Shelley left here on a business trip he had his racing department in good shape and on his return will have little to do to be ready for the inaugural.
