BULL LEA IN A ROMP "Concludes His 1938 Campaign by - Victory in Pimlico Handicap. -Carries 122 Pounds to Lead All the Way to Easily Beat Sun Alexandria and Bottle Top. BALTIMORE, Md., Nov. 9 Bull Lea, one of the higher-ranking three-year-olds, concluded his 1938 campaign this afternoon by romping away with the first running of the Pimlico Handicap at the Maryland jQCkey Clubs course. Installed an odds-on favorite, the son of Bull Dog and Rose Leaves, in Warren Wrights Calumet Farm stable, never left the result in doubt, as he led from "end to end" over a mile and seventy yards of slow going and despite top weight of 122 pounds drew away in the stretch to defeat "iWillis Sharpe Kilmers Sun Alexandria by -five lengths. Half this margin away was Mrs. Vera S. Braggs Bottle Top in third place, while Aethelwold and Sip Raleigh completed the field. i Clear but sharply cooler weather prevailed and a good-sized week-day crowd turned out-for the Pimlico Handicap running, while the track dried out gradually, but was far from being at its best. A dozen originally were entered for the principal attraction, a ,500 ""added affair, but only five accepted, thereby making the net value to the winner ,425. i.This sum elevated Bull Leas earnings for the season to 9,575, as the result of seven , victories in sixteen starts, four seconds and one third. K. Breaking in front, the Chicago-owned colt forged into a clear lead going to the first .turn after which he was taken in hand by Urving Anderson and rated smoothly far off the rail thereafter. Leaving the back stretch I Anderson let out a notch and Bull Lea simply galloped his opposition into defeat thereafter. 1 Sun Alexandria was caught in close quarters going to the first turn and had to race between horses down the back stretch to reach the runner-up position, but he at no time troubled the winner. Bottle Top was rated in last position until, the final quarter, but his bid fell far short, while Aethelwold and Sir Raleigh both tired. j DUEL SCORES. - Isador Biebers Duel, out of competition all last year and until a few weeks ago, easily won the sixth race to complete a double for Yarberry. He reached the end of the mile and a furlong event engaging J a dozen lowly platers, four lengths before Continin d on ttcenty-sevenih page. Duel was rated far back until the final half mile, where he rushed forward so quickly on the outside that he got to the front upon being straightened out for the run home. High Velocity returned to winning form in the Meadowbrook Handicap, the grade "C" secondary feature, after having been unable to earn brackets since mid-June, when he accounted for the Bunker Hill Handicap at Suffolk Downs. Under confident handling from Warren Yarberry, Houghton P. Met-calfs four-year-old son of Abbots Nymph and Big Sally went to the front with a rush on the second turn in the mile and one-sixteenths event and then held Woolford Farms Robert L., the favorite, safe by a length. Mrs. T. Stevensons Tempestuous was third, seven lengths away and well before Your Buddy. Tempestuous and Your Buddy dominated the race from the start, but High Velocity went easily under restraint in third position until leaving the back stretch. After taking the lead quickly on the outside, he opened up, but Yarberry didnt urge High Velocity at the end, with the result that the steadily-closing Robert L. was able to reach his heels. KNICKERBOCKER GRADUATES. Knickerbocker, a first-time starter from the J. E. Widener stable, led all the way over the mile and seventy yards distance of the opening event, but the son of Teddy and Warrior Lass just lasted to nose out H. P. Metcalfs winning mark as the Starmount Stables Shambles, the favorite, was another half length back. Gaona was fourth in the field of a dozen maiden two-year-olds. Johnny Longden had Knickerbocker under steady restraint in showing the way and he kept his mount well away from the deeper going on the inside. The Widener colt enjoyed a long lead a furlong out, but weakened steadily thereafter as Winning Mark and Shambles came on after having cut through on the .inside t6 reach contention. S. W. Blocks Absconder proved a true odds-on favorite in the second race, reaching the end of the six furlongs dash five lengths before John N. Whalens Clap In, as Mrs. H. Goods Balcony, was close by in third place and Tzigane fourth in the field of ten ordinary platers. Hi .Mora had Absconder in the middle of the pack during the opening quarter, but the Challenger II. gelding moved up rounding the turn and took an easy lead in the stretch. Clap In made a late bid to place second as Balcony faltered. Gridine, improving youngster owned by James D. Norris, won his second victory of the meeting by nosing out Calumet Farms Doubt Not in the third race, at six furlongs, as the Falaise Stables War Dog was third, two and a half lengths back, with Marriage fourth in the field of twelve. War Dog was made the favorite, but the son of Bull Dog apparently didnt care for the going, as he only showed speed in spots, although finishing gamely. Yarberry rounded out a triple by guiding Benjamin Deutschs Spring Meadow to victory in the seventh race, which attracted Qight platers going a mile and three-sixteenths. Spring Meadow was placed in the .lead early and led all the way to beat The Runner a length, as Head Hunter- was third. The winner and The Runner .were the most fancied in the open race.
