JOHNSONS FOREIGN BAND Four of Ten at New Orleans are Imported Horses. Veteran Horsemen Strong on Racing Ability of Quartet Made Reputations in Argentina. NEW ORLEANS, La., Nov. 9. New Orleans racing fans who have been reading with interest of the exploits of many foreign-bred thoroughbreds brought to the United States the past several years will have a chance to see some Argentina stock at the Fair Grounds the coming season. The well-known turfman, Lon W. Johnson, reached the local oval Friday with ten head, and a quartet were foreigners obtained by Johnson recently in New York at a reported big but undisclosed price. The horses by name are Hijo Manso, Lieber and Mon Reve, six-year-olds, and Derroche, a five-year-old. Hijo Manso and Lieber started recently at Empire City for their first United States appearance, but the other two will make their debut here following the start of the meeting Thanksgiving Day. Whether there are any Phar Laps, Cabal-lero II.s, Amor Brujos, Ligarotis or other imported thoroughbreds which have made the head lines in this country in Johnsons quartet, is left to be seen, but the veteran horseman is "high" on the group. Each is preceded by a fine reputation in Argentina, and though Hijo Manso and Lieber failed to set any worlds afire in their debut, in which they both finished unplaced, an indication of what Johnson thinks of them is provided in the fact they went against the best sprinters in New York. The event was. won by the fleet Bill Farnsworth. The other six which Johnson unloaded here Friday were the familiar Col. Greene, Idle Midget, Rocky Margot, Night Bud, Dina S. and Mercene. Apprentice Delbert Slagle got in with the shipment and will do the riding throughout the winter. Five more representatives of the Joe Brown stable also got in on the same New York car. They were Bad Day, Tireless Lady, Double Tough, Now and Then and Mary Lou Dalton. When T. M. Dorsett finishes his engagement in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs Saturday and heads here Browns stable will be complete, embracing fifteen head. Jewell Dorsett, Spillway and seven others are already present. -
