SHREVEPORT, La., Nov. 9. Pleasant weather, improved racing conditions and a splendid card of eight race3 helped to attract another large crowd to the State Jockey Club track at the local Fair Grounds this afternoon. The racing strip still is a little off, but it should be fast for tomorrows program. The feature on the card was the New Orleans Purse, a sprint of six furlongs, and in" it W. C. Hoovers Phrixus raced to a mildly surprising victory, his first in four starts during the current meeting. The five-year-old son of Happy Argo, well handled by W. Cassity, who is among the leading riders here, covered the three-quarters in 1:18 and won by two lengths. Closest to the Hoover gelding at the wire was Instead, while Prince Pad, which shared favoritism with the runner-up, finished third. Imperial Jean was best of the others in the field of six. NEVER RELINQUISHES LEAD. Phrixus, which paid 7 for , followed Be Discreets pace for about a half-mile and when the latter began to falter, the Hoover horse assumed a lead which he never relinquished. Be Discreet gave way altogether in the last eighth and wound up last. Instead got the: place by a neck while Prince Pad beat Imperial Jean a length for third j money. Kah Minca was the only other starter. Sweet Manners was made a pronounced favorite in the six furlongs second, but after being forced back sharply going into the far turn never recovered and could not reach a contending position. Victoryin the race went to K. Cronks Goodbye Blues, ridden by W- McCabe, which completed the distance two lengths before his nearest rival. Na-hallac and Tonagar dominated the early running, but they gave way badly in the drive and finished out of the picture, Van Law moving up to be second and Quick Santa third. Goodbye Blues scored his second of the meeting, paying 3 for SWEEPMORE BY NOSE. Another to race to his record triumph of the meeting was H. Barnsfields Sweep-more, which jockey H. Thudium drove to a nose victory over the six furlongs of the third. Saving ground all the way, Sweep-more, one of the choices in the field, of nine, worked his way to the front approaching the third turn, but just lasted to stall off Polly Shaw, which had to be content with the place. Texas Maid was third, a length and a half off the leaders and a good distance in front of Contribute, which ran fourth. Both Parka and Contribute got to the front before Sweepmore came along to settle the issue. W. J. Hubbels Rosy Doon made her first start of the local season a successful one by turning back nine other sprinting platers at six furlongs in the fourth race. Hallucina-tor was second and Free Play third. Rosy Doon, paying a little more than 9 to 1 in the mutuels, led from flag-fall to finish under- the guidance of J. Juarez and passed the judges at the end of the trip with a lead of two and a half lengths. The favorite here was Thresher, which quit after showing some speed for about a quarter mile.
