One of the most recent and valuable acquisitions to Americas breeding stock is the well-bred and successful stallion Shifting Sands II. This fine English horse, a chestnut son of Fairway Panic, was purchased by F. B. Koontz of Tulsa, Oklahoma, one of the most enthusiastic breeders in the country. Mr. Koontz had Shifting Sands TX shipped from England September 16, and the horse arrived in this country on September 26. He was transferred to the Military Stock Farm of John S. St. Lucia Fairway, sire of Shifting Sands n., won twelve of his fifteen races and earned 13,610.00 on the turf. When three years old he captured the Newmarket Stakes, Eclipse Stakes, St. Leger and Champion Stakes. The following season he won five of six races, including the Champion Stakes and Jockey Club Cup, over two miles and a quarter; In England, 1936, Fairway was the leading sire of all winners, and 1937 was second on the list of leading sires of winners. Fairway was also first as the leading sire of winning two-year-olds in England in 1936 and also 1937. Fairway is the sire of Pay Up, Harien, Taj Akbar, Full Sail, Fair Copy, Fair Trial, Fairbairn, Bunker, Fairey, Tide Away, Embuche, Lovers Path, Ann of Australia, Detonia, Fairplay and Port Marnock. To the end of 1937 Fairways get earned 84,960.00. Fairway is a full brother to Pharos, who was neaa or tne French sires list in 1935 and second on the list of winning sires in 1936. Pharos is represented by the four-year-old Bouillon, the three-year-old Fastnet, Ambrose Light and Physalis and two-year-old En Fraude. Pharos record in England is that his get have won 147 races valued at 41,230 and in France a total of 210 races, valued at 04,626, a total of 257 races and ,245,750. The above figures comprise first money only. If "place" money is included, Pharos was head of the French sires list in 1935. Pharos is also sire of Nearco, Italys wonder horse, which sold recently for 00,000. Scapa Flow, dam of Fairway, sire of Shifting Sands II., is an outstanding mare, standing barely 15.1 and has achieved the honor of having produced winners of more money than any other matron. The winners from Scapa Flow are as follows: Fairway, 13,-610; Pharos, 8,470; Fair Isle, 6,095; Spit-head, 8,205; Highlander, 2,120; Fore, ,750; Pentland, ,638;: and Pharillon, 74; making a total money won by Scapa Flows get. 21,925 to date. Scapa Flow is a chestnut mare foaled in 1914. Panic, dam of Shifting Sands II., is dam of . seven winners, including Solfo, winner of stakes valued at 7,330, including Ham Stakes, Prendergast Stakes, King Edward VII. Stakes, Ascot, Gratwicke Produce, " Goodwood, Jockey Club Stakes, handicapped within one pound of top weight in Free Handicap, 1938. Solfo fill stand at Aisalavie Stud, under Stanley Smallwood for the fee of 98 sovereigns for the season of 1939. Also , Solfatara, which, when bred to Fairway, produced the colt Solway. Firth, three-quarter brother to Shifting Sands, a bay colt, foaled in 1937, which sold in the 1938 Newmarket Second July meeting for 8,500. Salfatara is a full sister to Solfo. Solfatara, stakes winner of ,455, including the Nassau Stakes, Goodwood beating Brown Betty, and Nottingham Trial Plate, ran second in the Oaks to Chatalsine, ran second three times, winning ,765 in place money alone. Panic also produced Davy Jones a winner on the flat, over hurdles, and a sure winner of the Grand National, but for the breaking of the reins at the finish, running off the course. Tiderace winner of the Column Produce Stakes, Newmarket, Marsh Harrier, Fly Pa- per; Tipstaff all winners at home and abroad, and Shifting Sands winner of the Barnwell Stakes in this, his three-year-old form. Panics progeny has won over 00,-000 in stakes alone up to date.
