MAYER STABLE FORMIDABLE Names Five Horses for 00,000 Handicap and Widener Cup. Perifox, Brooklyn, Ossabaw, Main Man and Magic Hour Form California Owners Handicap Division. LOS ANGELES, Calif., Nov. 23. Louis B, Mayer, Hollywood Motion Picture leader who is said to have expended upwards of 00,000 for thoroughbreds during recent months, promises to cut an important figure in the decision of the big turf events of America from this time forward. He has named no less than five first class horses for both the Santa Anita Handicap and the Widener Challenge Cup, it was learned here today. Perifox; Brooklyn, Ossabaw, Main Man, and Magic Hour are the big five in the Mayer Stable at this time, and the name of each has been sent to Santa Anita and Hialeah Parks for the respective 00,000 and 0,000 races which highlight the two leading winter race courses. The plan is to have at least two starters in each race. The Mayer board of strategy, will later on, perhaps during January, decide on just which of the five will be sent on the Florida invasion, and which will be left in California for the greater prize. DERBY HORSES. Mask and Wig, and Joy Boy, two promising juveniles, will be pointed especially for the Santa Anita Derby. It is believed probable that one or two other crack prospects for next years Derbies will be acquired, so that the 1939 three-year-old contingent ,pf the stable is not considered as being completed at this time. Perifox is the William Woodward horse which won several stakes in England, and was rated as top of the two-year-olds racing in the Tight Little Isle, during his juvenile career, and was listed among the first ten of the Derby division. He has never raced in America, but was purchased two months ago from Woodward with the object of having him head the Mayer stud farm soon to be established in Southern California, after his racing days are over. Brooklyn was obtained from Col. E. R. Bradley. " The colt likewise is destined for stud duty, but his handlers hope that he will stand training this winter. It is claimed that the leg infirmity which kept him on the side lines since early in his three-year-old career, has been completely cured. Brooklyn was one of the top juveniles in his year, and was an early future book favorite for the Kentucky Derby. Magic Hour finished second to War Admiral in his last out. He won the Lawrence Realization at Belmont Park, and holds decisions over Jolly Tar, Cant Wait, Dah He, Liberty Flight, John One, Quick Devil, and other good three-year-olds of the present season. Ossabaw, the brilliant steeplechaser, is looked upon by many shrewd horsemen as one of the best handicap prospects in the country today. The four-year-old son of Grandace won his last four races over the jumps and has displayed dazzling speed in the stretch, and between obstacles. In this connection, it is recalled that Azucar, an ex-steeplechaser, won the first Santa Anita Handicap. Main Man is a sturdy son of Hildur, which seems to be getting better and better. He has captured seven of his thirteen starts this year, and is rated ten pounds better than, any other horse now at Tanforan, other than Ligaroti. The Mayer Stable is rapidly taking shape. Racers, sires, brood mares and yearlings have been acquired with amazing rapidity. A string has been tied to jockey George Woolf ; jockey C. Biermans contract has been purchased; and an effort is being made to employ one or two other first-class riders. A breeding farm is to be acquired within the next few weeks. Lonny Copenhaver and T. D. Grimes have been engaged as trainers, and Allan C. Long, noted Kentucky horseman, is under contract to manage the nursery.
