ZENANA SCORES AGAIN Heighe Filly Outruns Charles F. in Purse at Bowie. Pays Good Price Because of Strong Support for Grey Nurse Light Rain Falls. BOWIE, Md., Nov. 23. Zenana, a steady-going miss in the stable of R. H. Heighe, proved most capable of the Maryland-bred and -foaled two-year-olds in the Shadyside Purse, feature of a dismal mid-week program at these grounds. Under skies which constantly threatened rain but let forth only a few scattering drops, the daughter of Theatrical Zenobia II. drove past the winning post half a length in advance of the gamely-closing Charles F., with Accidental another length away as she deprived the stoutly-supported choice, Grey Nurse, of third money. The score marked the third in half a dozen chances for the golden filly as she traveled the distance in 1:15 to be as straight as a string to the finish. Due to the surprising support awarded Grey Nurse, her backers obtained .80 to . The Heighe youngster left the post a trifle slowly, but moved up fast on the inside in the initial quarter, to race in the deepest going along the rail for the first three furlongs. At the middle of the turn it appeared she would be well beaten, but Yarberry saved ground when the leaders swung wide, and brought her on with hand, heel and whip to gain the award. SLOW STARTER. Charles F. ran right back to his race of opening day. Sluggish and far out of it during the early stages, he warmed to his work in the final quarter and came along the inner rail through the stretch with a nice display of speed. He might have taken the chief award only for his dullness away from the post. Accidental, a lightly regarded outsider, went forwardly for the entire trip and then outgamed Grey Nurse. The latter had blinkers taken from her equipment today and j there was plenty of support for her. The daughter of Sir Greysteel set the pace for the first half mile and then was through. Fair Rock lired badly after- showing early speed. Zostera, purchased at Pimlico by Mrs. C. W. Williams, made good in his second appearance under her colors as he raced to a two-length victory in the six furlongs ,500 top and bottom claimer for three-year-olds and upward. Closest to the son of John Continued on twenty-third page. ZENANA SCORES AGAIN Continued from first page. P. Grier Sea Moss at the end was Ocean Roll, claimed at the Baltimore track by John A. Manfuso, that gelding outlasting Postage Due, with Winning Chance in fourth place, two lengths away. The third horse was the best-backed favorite of the afternoon, going to the post at odds-on, while the winner was among the outsiders. ZOSTERA RATED. Dabson had Zostera in a good position during the first three-eighths of a mile, rushing him through on the inside making the turn, to gain a short lead at the top of the stretch. Under hard urging he increased his advantage in the final furlong. Ocean Roll was right there for the entire trip and only faltered in the last sixteenth. Postage Due did not leave the post with the alertness which marked his best races this season. However, he went into contention quickly, but was forced to take the overland all the way, losing many lengths thereby. That was his only alibi. Happy Knot had early speed but quit badly, while the others never were- serious factors. Merry Gesture, a daughter of Zacaweista Epitine which races for John J. Watts, registered her fourth victory in a dozen starts when she drove to a half length triumph over Robespierre in the juvenile race which attracted the afternoons second-best field. This was a ,000 top and ,000 bottom claimer. The two leaders were decidedly superior to the other five contestants, for Romaunt was five lengths away when he outlasted Steam Roller for third money. There were some anxious moments for the backers of the winner after her number was flashed on top, for she had swerved in front of the runner-up just inside the furlong post, forcing De Camillas to snatch her up. The claim of foul was given consideration before the stewards permitted the result to stand. BOSONIA GRADUATES. Bosonia, favored by the feather weight of 100 pounds, proved considerably best of the plater maidens of the three-year-olds and upward division named for the mile and one-sixteenth opener. At the end West had the daughter of Bostonian Esthonia a length and one-half in advance of Big Bud, with Turkish Brand three lengths farther away. The C. K. Finch representative had the speed of the party and set the pace for practically the entire trip. She was a slight choice over Turkish Brand, showing .10 to . Big Bud moved into contention going to the far turn and continued steadily thereafter though unable to overhaul the leader. Turkish Brand, sluggish in the early stages, finished well. Hope turned in a fair effort to be fourth, with the others beaten off. Brilliant Rose, recently arrived from Nar-ragansett Park, gave apprentice D. West his second straight winner when she stole through unexpectedly on the inside in the final sixteenth of the mile and seventy yards claimer which was second on the card, to snatch a nose decision from Rosarian in the final strides. The latter was best, but De Camillas, looking to the outside, did not observe the Brilliant mare until too late. A length and one-half away, Pirate Lass outlasted the weakly ridden Chief Evergreen for third money. :
