CHICAGO STARTS SUBWAY Chicagos subway was officially started Saturday when Secretary of the Interior Ickes shoveled the first dirt at the scene just south of Chicago Avenue on State Street where the shaft is to be sunk for the initial section of the subway tunnels. Mayor Kelly and other prominent public officials were present.
