EIGHTY-ONE ENTRIES iSreat Array of Coming Three-Year-Olds for Hialeahs Rich Event, i Many of Most Prominent Owners of Country Represented Flamingo - - to Be Run Saturday, Feb. 28. MIAMI, Fla., Dec. 17. The 0,000 added Flamingo Stakes, first important stepping stone to the countrys three-year-old racing Classics of 1939, drew a list of eighty-one thoroughbreds, it was announced today by racing secretary Charles J. McLennan. - The Flamingo will be decided at Hialeah Park, Saturday, February 25. A number of the countrys outstanding two-year-olds are among the nominees listed with secretary McLennan, and these will become three at the turn of the new year when all horses advance in age, according to the laws of racing. . The Flamingo Stakes was run as the Florida Derby prior to 1937. Joseph E. Widener, president of the Miami Jockey Club, ordered the change because of the abuse of the word "Derby," it being his opinion that the Kentucky Derby by reason of tradition, was the only race in this country rightfully entitled "to be called such. The old Florida Derby, and more recently the Flamingo, named to honor the famous salmon-colored flock of 350 imported birds which inhabit the infield of Hialeahs beautiful course, furnished a number of turf stars which went on to more fame and fortune in ranking spring, summer and fall three-year-old stakes elsewhere. FINAL FLORIDA DERBY. The final Florida Derby in 1936 went to Joseph E. Wideners Brevity, which paraded to the post a favorite in the Kentucky Derby, only to be beaten an eyelash by Bold Venture after being knocked down at the start. Other noteworthy winners prior t this were Mrs. Harry Payne Whitneys Lightning Bolt in 1931; Geo. D. Wideners great filly, Evening, in 1932; Mrs. Isabel Dodge Sloanes Time Clock in 1934, and Col. E. R. Bradleys champion filly, Black Helen, in 1935. A glamorous setting was provided in 1937, when -Townsend B. Martin of Westbury, L. I. purchased Court Scandal from John Hay Whitney on the eve of the Flamingo running and the next day he greeted his newly-acquired steed in the winners circle. Ranking at the top of the illustrious list of Flamingo winners, perhaps, is Lawrin which last season scintillated to fame in the colors of Herbert M. Woolf, Kansas City sportsman. Lawrin went places from here. He captured the coveted Kentucky Derby, the Hollywood Trial Stakes at Inglewood and American Invitational three-year-old championship at the California course. Lawrin has returned to Hialeah and now is listed one of the choices for the 0,000 added Widener on March 4. INSCOELDA WOOLFS HOPE. . Woolf is conceded another good chance to gather in Flamingo laurels, for he has three named. Technician, Unerring and Inscoelda. It is Inscoelda that trainer Ben Jones is banking on to duplicate Lawrins feat, although she is a filly. Inscoelda is a daughter of Insco, the sire of Lawrin. Her dam Continued on twenty-third page. NOMINATIONS FOR 0,000 ADDED FLAMINGO STAKES Continued from first page. is Griselda. She has started sixteen times as a two-year-old and was unplaced but twice. Her record reads six firsts, three seconds and five thirds. The Daily Racing Form turf experts voted Inscoelda the champion two-yeai-old filly of the year, and she was conceded that title as . well by practically all other racing authorities. Inscoelda definitely clinched the honor when she trounced both colts and fillies in the thirty-second running of the Walden Stakes r.t Pimlico, beating out Volitant, which until that time had won four of his five starts. Inscoeldas most important triumph prior to the Walden came, in the 0,000 added Arlington Lassie Stakes, wherein she defeated Dinner Date and Unerring, her stable-mate. In the list of Flamingo entries Volitant, owned by Messrs. George H. Bull and John A. Morris of the Saratoga Stable, must be considered a powerful entry. Volitant, in addition to winning the Saratoga Sales Stakes and the Spalding Lowe Jenkins at Laurel Park, was the only two-year-old to give the unbeaten El Chico a tussle this year. Volitant came within inches of tarnishing EI Chicos record in the Junior Champion at Aqueduct. BRADLEY NAMES FOUR. Col. E. R. Bradley of Kentucky Derby fame has four in the Flamingo, namely, Benefactor, Balmy Spring, Big Pebble and Buyer Beware. In Benefactor he hopes to develop Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes timber. Other prominent nominators include the Belair Stud, with Flarion, Joharie and Thel-lusson; Bomar Stable, with Carlisia; Mrs. Charles Bromley, with Sungino; Mrs. Dodge Sloanes Brookmeade Stable, with Search and Part Time; Warren Wrights Calumet Farm, with Easy Mon, Sure Off, Doubt Not and Vain Bo; J.
