1 FAIR GROUNDS TURF NOTES C 9 The four-year-old brown filly, Nellie Mc, owned by O. L. Foster, which Buffered injuries while en route from Narragansett to New Orleans several weeks ago, is showing some improvement, according to her trainer, but it is doubtful if she will get into competition until late in the season. Tom B. Miller, Oklahoma turfman, shipped his stable of thoroughbreds to Oriental Park to be campaigned for the remainder of the winter. Those included in the hipmcnt to the Cuban track are Eomount, Pakala, Tru-mont, Leap Year Lady and Move After. Apprentice Jimmy Linton accepted his first mount of the season Monday afternoon at the Fair Grounds when he was astride Ecna Bane for his contract employer, W. A. Mikel. For the first time since the opening of the Louisiana Jockey Clubs current race meeting, racing secretary Leigh offered an extra race for Tuesdays program. This was deemed advisable because of the condition of the track. Acting for Mrs. D. Brown, R. A. Brown purchased the three-year-old filly Parlor Trick and the four-year-old filly Alcrgy from W. W. Adams for a private consideration. Brown filed application for a trainers license and will handle the conditioning of the new purchases. Trainer Vic Cowdell added the five-year-old Fandan to the list of horses he is training for E. Chanock of Chicago. The plater has not been in competition for some time, but is expected to make his return to racing in the near future. Joe Bernard, trainer for the Ecdford Stock Farm, returned from his home in Dallas, Texas, where he spent Christmas, and resumed his duties at the local course. He was accompanied by apprentice W. Armstrong. Jockey Harold Gower departed for his home in Donoras, Pa., and will remain there until the opening of Oaklawn Park at Hot Springs, Ark., before making his return to the saddle. George Planche has taken over the engagement book of jockey Don Scurlock and will make the boys mounts for the remainder of the Fair Grounds season. After spending several weeks in the Crescent City, Frank Bowles returned to his home in Louisville, Ky., but he contemplates "JS1"? another visit before the close of the 1938-39 season of the Louisiana Jockey Club Jockey Leon "Buddy" Haas suffered a cut over his left eye which required several ?J nu3l .the rult of auto csh here on Christmas Day. However, the injury Is not serious, and he was present at the track this afternoon. Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity day will be observed at the Fair Grounds Friday, it was announced by general manager R. S. Eddy, Jr. The fraternity will hold its sixth annual convention in New Orleans this week-end.
