TONY ORTELL PASSES AWAY MIAMI, Fla., Dec. 27 Tony Ortell, prominent in racing for years, died in DPaul Hospital, St. Louis, Mo., this morning after a lingering illness. News of his death came as a shock to his friends gathered here and cast a pall over racing. He had been confined in the hospital over a month. Doctors in attendance said he never had a chance to recover, as he had been the victim of the dread and baffling malady known as Hodgins Disease. The deceased was 53 years old. He was born in St. Louis, where he will be buried. He is survived by four sisters and two brothers, one of whom, Frank Ortell, is turf editor of the New York World-Telegram. Funeral arrangements will be announced tomorrow.
