14 IN BEYDA-BENNETT BAND String Arrives at Churchill Downs in Trainer Causeys Charge. Stable Rider, Pete McLean, Nursing Broken Collar Bone Injured in Oaklawn Park Finale. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 14 The combined stables of Leo Beyda and Dr. E. F. Bennett, under the supervision of trainer William Causey, headed the arrival at Churchill Downs Thursday. The outfit, numbering fourteen horses, was brought up from Oaklawn Park, Hot Springs, Ark., where it was among the leading stables campaigned at that point. All of the thoroughbreds in the consignment weathered the trip in fine manner and require little training to be ready for the opening of the Churchill Downs meeting. Included in the car were the useful performers, Delta Dan, Joji T., Imperial Jean, Holl Image, Kosse, Blue Dragon, Connie Ann, Peggy Byrd, Lucky Ducky, Sure Swift, Maleman, No Ending, Red Moss and Bachelor Boy. Virtually all were engaged in competition during the thirty-day season in the Vapor City. RYAN TO RIDE. Trainer Causey expressed doubt that the stables contract rider, jockey Pete McLean, who is nursing a broken collar bone, would be sufficiently recovered in time to return to the saddle during the approaching Churchill Downs meeting. McLean was injured on the final day of the Oaklawn Park meeting. During the absence of McLean, jockey Paul Ryan will do the bulk of the riding for the Beyda-Bennett combination at the Louisville track. Following the close of the Churchill Downs meeting, the Beyda-Bennett stables are to be transferred to Lincoln Fields, where the 1939 racing season in Chicago will be inaugurated on May 25. Causeys charges have been active throughout the winter, having engaged in competition at Tropical Park in the early winter, after which they participated in the racing -at the New Orleans Fair Grounds before going to Hot Springs.
