. . .. 1 mm t I Kentucky Derbys of Past-Charts and Future Books 1928 i. . . ... A The names of Reigh Count, Sun Beau, Misstep, Toro, Petee-Wrack, Martie Flynn, Strolling Player, Jack Higgins, Distraction, Typhoon and Vito at this stage of American turf history loom large in retrospect. They were part and parcel of the Kentucky Derby field of 1928 and to many a prejudiced eye only the year of Twenty Grand, Equipoise, Mate, et al, saw a field that even closely approached that group in class. It was, without a dissenting vote, one of the greatest if not the top field of all time that ever assembled for the turfs one-day roman holiday in May in the Queen City of the South. Reigh Count, the Derby winner of that year, making good the publics confidence in him as future book and starting favorite, raced on to international fame by traveling to England to win the Coronation Cup, and missed victory in the Ascot Gold Cup by a short margin, while Sun Beau plodded on through the following years to pile up the tremendous total of 76,744 in money winnings. Sun Beau became the worlds greatest money-winning horse and holds that title today. He was not a great three-year-old. He was 60 to 1 in the opening line on the Kentucky Derby. Reigh Count was 4. Misstep, the crack Marks horse everybody could follow because of the wide blaze on his face, missed championship honors only because Reigh Count was out that year. Misstep was 10 to 1, betting odds that indicate a contender. Misstep was all of that. Toro was 20 to 1 and he also was a contender. He was a brilliant three-year-old albeit an unlucky one. He won Derbys and missed others by inches. The Derby finish was Reigh Count, Misstep and Toro. Sun Beau was present, thats all. Aside from being one of the best fields ever to start in the Derby, the 1928 running was the richest, Reigh Count, the winner, taking down the substantial sum of 5,375 as his share of the spoils. A reproduction of the chart of this memorable race is here presented and should prove interesting reading: FIFTH RACE 1 1-4 MILES. Woodtrap, May 21, 1921 2: 03 7 106. Michell; bred by Mr. Willis Sharpe Kilmer. WENT TO POST 5:05. AT POST 6 minutes. Start good and slow. Won easily; second and third driving. REIGH COUNT was ridden vigorously in the early running and responded nobly, racing into a forward position in the first half mile, then forced the pace and, under strong riding in the stretch, took the lead and drew away to win with speed in reserve. MISSTEP began fast next to the inner rail, showed fine speed and, setting a fast pace for the going, finished well, but was easily held safe. TORO suffered slightly from some interference, but when clear in the stretch, came steadily and was running fast at the end. JACK HIGGINS was prominent for the entire way and ran a good and game race. REIGH OLGA dropped back in the early running and came fast in the stretch. MARTIE FLYNN began tiring after going a mile. BLACKWOOD tired. BONIVAN was done after going a half mile. PETEE-WRACK was always far back. VITO and SORTIE were never prominent. BOBASHELA closed a ep. STROLLING PLAYER raced far back for most of the way. Scratched 24597 Colonel Shaw, 126; 24563 Mop Up, 126; 24250 Rumpelstiltskin, 126; 24597Dowagiac, 126.
