HAVRES INAUGURATION Fighting Fox Top Weight in Harford Handicap, Feature Race. Seventeen Others Entered to Oppose the Belair Stud Racer Twenty-Seventh Renewal of Stake. HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., April 14. The Harford Handicap, six furlongs dash for a purse of ,000 added, headlines the opening of racing at the Havre de Grace plant of the Harford Agricultural and Breeders Association. This running, which will be the twenty-seventh, promises to be one of the most interesting in the offering of the stake. Greater horses than are entered in tomorrows engagement have won the stake in the past, but the field of eighteen that is slated to go postward here promises to provide as keen competition as has been seen in the various runnings. Racing secretary Charles J. McLennan has assigned weights in a manner to insure a thrilling contest. Top allotment of 122 pounds has been assigned to Belair Studs Fighting Fox. The four-year-old son of Sir Gallahad in. is making his debut after being in winter quarters, but his excellent record on retirement is sufficient to justify McLennans opinion of him. Under only one pound less than the top weight comes Mrs. Louise Viaus Conquer, which is also coming out of winter quarters. A six-year-old, the son of Victorian went into his winter camp winner of his final start last season and trials indicate that he will emerge in top shape. EXPECT IMPROVEMENT. To demonstrate the even thought that McLennan has of the field, he has asked Howard Bruces Jay Jay and Alfred Vanderbilts Airflame to carry 120 pounds. Jay Jay is the only entry in this years running that has proved successful in a previous renewal. The six-year-old son of Wise Counsellor was victor in the 1936 running. Airflame has had a conditioner, for he raced in the Bowie Inaugural and, while his effort was on the disappointing side, he can be expected to show improvement. Rough Time, winner of the Inaugural, was not nominated for the Harford. In addition to Conquer, there are several others coming out of winter quarters. These include Brandywine Stables Bull Whip, J. W. Y. Martins Battle Jack, Alvin Unter-meyers Chaps, Mrs. Colin MacLeods Per-nie and W. E. Boeings Grim Reaper. Making her first start of the season is George D. Wideners Salamis. SUN EGRET EST CONDITION. Horses which have had conditioning races in preparation for the Harford include the A. C. C. Stables Sun Egret, second in his final prep at Bowie, and Bomar Stables Benjam, second in the Bowie Inaugural. Supporting the headliner, secretary McLennan has drafted a creditable card headed by the Colonial Handicap, at one mile and seventy yards. In this, seven good distance performers have been named. The Shenandoah, an allowance race for three-year-olds exclusively, at six furlongs, will likely see a limit field of twelve go postward. Special train and bus service has been arranged for from neighboring cities. The first race each day will be at 2:30 p. m., with the "Daily Double," under the direction of H. A. M. Frank, being held on the first and second races. Well known and competent officials will act in all capacities.
