SIXTEEN NAMED FOR 0,000 DIXIE HANDICAP » _ Crack Field of Older Stars to Meet in Valuable Pimlico Fixture ♦ Thanksgiving Prospective Favorite — Pompoon Will Not" Lack Admirers — Cravat, Heelfly and Jacola Also Considered Dangerous BALTIMORE, Md., May 9.— With but a few exceptions, all of the countrys outstanding older horses in readiness to run are among the sixteen candidates for the thirty-fifth running of the Dixie Handicap at famous old Pimlico here tomorrow. Despite the absence of Bull Lea, which bowed a tendon in his final trial for the 0,000 added race of a mile and three-sixteenths and which may never sport silks again, the Dixie field comprises enough top stayers to suggest one of the finest renewals in the events time-honored existence. Sandwiched in between the great three-year-old specials the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, the Dixie nevertheless has attracted the interest it deserves and, given fair weather tomorrow, Pimlico should entertain a crowd second only in size to that due Saturday. Only a sharp downpour will prevent the track from being other than fast. Having one of the largest fields in its history, the Dixie with all sixteen overnight candidates going postward will gross 9,550 with the winner receiving 3,025 net and making it the richest since Sandy Ford surprised in 1930. THANKSGIVING READY. Expected to rule the favorite is Thanksgiving, Mrs. Parker Comings good Maryland-bred colt, by virtue of his impressive victories in the Excelsior Handicap at Jamaica last week-end, and in the Philadelphia Handicap in muddy going the previous Saturday. Originally assigned 117 pounds, the son of Bud Lerner and Inchcape Belle has incurred a three-pound penalty, but the additional weight does not appear to be troubling his more ardent supporters. Top weight of the candidates is Jerome H. Louchheims Pompoon, with 125 pounds. The Philadelphia-owned colt will be remembered for his sensational performance in the Dixie a year ago when, under 118 pounds, he established a new record of 1:56% for Continued on thirty-ninth page. Except for his disappointing effort last week in his first outing since early last summer, Pompoon would be among the Dixie favorites and, although improvement is expected of him, the talent is expected to give greater support to Cravat, Jacola and probably Heelfly. Cravat will be making his first start since capturing the San Juan Capistrano Handicap at Santa Anita, but the Townsend B, Martin colt has trained smartly and local racing enthusiasts recall the Preakness of last year when he came from far back to finish second to Dauber. His burden is 121 pounds. WIN LAST STARTS. Both Heelfly and Jacola have won their last starts, the Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt veteran oyer the local course and Edward Friendlys filly at Jamaica. The latter is really the second topweight with her assignment of 117 pounds, considering the five-pound sex allowance. Next in the weights at 115 pounds is Brown King, Joe W. Browns seven-year-old Argentine importation, which finished in a dead-heat with Tatterdemalion back of Jacola at Jamaica. He is learning the American way of racing and trainer J. B. Theall looks for him to go well in the Dixie. Heelfly gets in under 114 pounds and Burning Star appears well treated at 107 pounds. Likely pacemaker in the Dixie is Sir Damion, but the Marshall Field colorbearer may be given an argument in this respect by such lightweights as Hypocrite and Masked. General, unless Jacola or Thanksgiving are asked to go to the front. Several of the Dixie candidates were asked for light speed this morning to sharpen them for tomorrows race. Going three furlongs were Heelfly in :37, Masked General in :39, and Sir Damion in :38%, all breezing, as Cravat carried off honors by moving a half mile in :48% handily after doing the threes eighths in :35%. POMTOONS FAST MILE. The longer trials previously bringing them up to the Dixie were Heelfly, mile in 1:46; Isolater, mile in 1:42; Pompoon, mile in lj39%; Masked General, in 1:41, and Cravat, mile and an eighth in 1:53%. All went handily with the exception of the Martin colt, which was driving in his extended workout. The Dixie has been won in the past, in addition to Pompoon, by such well-known stayers as Equipoise, Gallant Knight, Dia-volo, Mike Hall, Mars, Sarazen, Chacolet, Hanover,, and on back to Vigil, Tom O., Chil-tree, Town Bowling, Harry Bassett and Preakness, and tomorrows winner should be worthy enough to have his name inscribed with this group. . ■ — •
