FIVE IN A ROW FOR ONE JEST Longden s Claim of Foul Against Filly Disallowed. White Hot Causes Crowding in Fanitian Handicap — Choices Fair Poorly at Jamaica Trade NEW YORK, N. Y., May 9.— In" a general overthrow of choices at Jamaica today, there came a claim of foul in the feature race, the Panitian Handicap, of a mile and a sixteenth. Johnny Longden, who was beaten on the favorite, J. Shirley Rileys Anthology, charged that Don Meade, who had won over him with W. C. Winfreys One Jest, had fouled him in the running. The claim was not allowed for reason that White Hot and not One Jest was the offender when Anthology was crowded shortly after the break. Choice after choice went by the board but the sport was interesting and enjoyed by a big crowd, although the weather was not entirely comfortable. In the feature there were only five starters. Anthology had the inside stall with One Jest in the second and White Hot the third. The field left in good order and White Hot almost at once came over and crowded into One Jest and she was bumped over to shut off Anthology, causing Longden to ease his mount back slightly. It was for this crowding that the claim of foul was lodged. It all took place before the horses had reached the first turn. LANDLUBBER SETS PACE. Landlubber had been rushed out in the lead and White Hot was in second place One Jest led Anthology with Fair Stein rather a bad last all through the first half mile. Landlubber was soon through with his pacemaking and then it was that Meade roused One Jest to go into the command. At the same time Longden moved on Anthology and for an instant the Riley gelding threatened to take the command but Ono Jest had plenty left and she hung on gamely when challenged. Through the stretch Anthology was under a hard drive, but it was of no avail and Onu Jest was safely home the winner by two lengths. Anthology had taken the place by a length from White Hot and Fair Stein ran down the tired Landlubber to be fourth but she was far back of White Hot. One of the best finishes of the season occurred in the Bridge Hampton Handicap, a six furlongs dash for class "C" horses, when four contestants swept over the line locked. The photograph revealed M. Van Beurens Pixey Dell, ridden by Joe Wagner, had scored over Donna Leona, from the Snow-white Stable, and J. S. Rileys Journey On had just taken third from Shoulder Arms. The result also continued to overthrow the choices, for Pixey Dell was a 15 to 1 chance, while Half Time, the favorite, after racing prominently to the stretch, quit badly. EARLY ADVANTAGE. Shoulder Arms left the inside stall fast and was soon three lengths clear, with Half Time showing the way to the others. Pixey Dell raced lapped on the Crack Brigade gelding and she was well before Candle Ends and Donna Leona. Nodarse made every use of the speed of Shoulder Arms and sending him along with no chance to take a long breath he still was showing the way into the stretch. By that time Half Time was weakening slightly and Pixey Dell had moved into second place. Donna Leona was weaving her way through the field, but had scant racing room. It was not until inside the final furlong that Shoulder Arms weakened and there came a closing up. Donna Leona, forced to go out slightly to find racing room, closed with a mighty rush, with Journey On coming from far back to join the contention. Frank Closters Jack Fly beat a cheap band in the opening six furlongs dash under a vigorous drive by Lester Balaski and he was as good as 10 to 1 in the betting at post time. The son of High Jack took the measure of S. Bacharachs Ritorno, the favorite, which was weakly ridden by Johnny Longden, and John J. Whalens St. Anna saved third from Rocky Margot. The first favorite of the day to win was Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs Spanish Way. He scored over a field of platers in the mile and a sixteenth of the sixth race. Blond Spook was easily second best over Papa Jack and it is possible he might have beaten Spanish Way with a stronger rider than P. Mills.
