COLLINSVILLE, 111., May 9. — A large week-day crowd was on hand for the resumption of racing at Fairmount Park today, following the first "dark" Monday of the spring meeting. With the sun breaking through to dispel the clouds and dry out the track considerably after Mondays rain, the sport furnished was all that could be desired in the way of excitement. A number of sterling races were offered in which favorites took the number of the more lightly regarded entries and, although close finishes were not the order of the day, the camera was called into use on several occasions to determine the ultimate winner. One of the more interesting events of the afternoon was the fifth race. In it Oxford Lad, which was accounting for his first victory of the year, took the measure of Arctic Star, which was attempting to score his second victory. However, Oxford Lad proved to be too much for the Hernandez racer, coming to the finish of the mile some four lengths before Arctic Star. The time, over a heavy track, for the mile event was 1:43%. The first two-year-old race of the 1939 Illinois racing season resulted in a victory for "Butsey" Hernandez when Palmera T.f "vhich shared major support with Hi-Wave, defeated the latter in the four and one-half furlongs opener. John Oldham was third. Ito, sporting the silks of Mrs. E. M. Flaherty, scored a hard-earned victory in the six furlongs second race when he reached the wire a scant nose in advance of Nogalo. Rolled Notes, the early leader, with apprentice Oren Stroud astride, for the first mount of his career, saved the show award from the public choice, Muriellynn. Apprentice Otto Grohs scored a double when he piloted E. H. Moodys Be Discreet to his first victory of the year in accounting for the -third race, thus riding both parts of the "Daily Double" combination. The Moody colorbearer came to the end of the six furlongs dash two lengths before Dusky Maid. The latter held the scant advantage of a nose over Kai-Harri at the finish. Uncle Mitch finished fourth in the field of twelve. Three-year-olds contested the five and one-half furlongs fourth race. It resulted in a victory for Madam Gray when she reached the line of finish a length in advance of Can-u-Tell. Prince Verte, well regarded, along with Amos, outlasted the latter in the drive to the wire to save the minor portion of the purse. Noses separated the latter three as a spirited finish thrilled those in attendance. WEDNESDAYS GOOD CARD. The program of eight races to be presented at Fairmount Park Wednesday is one of the better-class week-day cards. Included in the offering is a higher bracketed claiming event which has been fashioned for three-year-old3 and older horses and which is to be contested over the mile and seventy yards route. The race carries a purse of 00. The six routers which will go postward In the sixth event are very well matched. They" have met previously at the New Orleans meeting and again at Hot Springs. It is probable the contention in the event will be furnished by either Runmilton, Mrs. E. B. Shipps six-year-old son of Bank Runner; Getalong, which raced to fourth place in the fourth race opening day, or Mrs. J. L. Heddes Molasses Bob. The latter also was an entry in the fourth event Saturday, and though the son of Challenger II. has won but one race this -year, he is capable of giving a good account of himself, especially on an off-track. Also entered in the sixth is Cris-. tate, Mrs. J. L. Chesneys racer, which could account for the event. The remaining two entrants are Swift Spot and Hit and Run, another consistent router. The eight race program is made up of five sprint affairs and three over a distance of ground. Mondays showers and dark skies cleared with Tuesdays return of summer-like weath- • er. It is probable that with a continuation of sunshine, that track conditions for Wednesdays card will be favorable.
