1 CHURCHILL DOWNS NOTES I s ■ § Jockey Eugene White escaped without injury when he was thrown by Matchup at Douglas Park as the horse wheeled while being exercised.. Suffering from a headache, the Churchill Downs stewards permitted jockey Warren Yarberry to cancel the two mounts that he had on Tuesdays program. C. C. Norman reported that he had X-rays taken of Tunicas injured foot to determine the cause of the slight lameness displayed by Joe Desopos handicap performer. However, it is believed that Tunica will be ready to make his 1939 debut in the opening day feature at Lincoln Fields. Bennett Creech sent the mares Miss Dolphin and Sister Polly to the farm of Mrs. A. M. Creech at Hopkins, Mo., Tuesday morning, to be retired from racing. E. H. Baumgardner will campaign only three horses for Mrs. A. A. Bowers, Youngs-town, Ohio, patron, during the Detroit meeting, he announced Tuesday morning. They are All Lady, Cossack Girl and Burning Wood. The six-year-old mare Black Mistress has been fired and later will be turned out in Lexington. Charles Gormley, who served as clerk of scales at Keeneland, departed Tuesday afternoon for Charles Town, W. Va., where he will be a member of the official personnel during the approaching season. If Ciencia is a starter in the Preakness Stakes Saturday at Pimlica, jockey Carroll Bierman will go to Maryland to ride the filly. Bierman stated that he will be advised Wednesday night whether the Santa Anita Derby winner would be a starter in the §50,-000 race Saturday. Former jockey Dave Bryant, who branched out as a trainer a year ago and has met with success in his new role, has made reservations for four horses at Detroit. They will be shipped from here at the close of the Churchill Downs season. Frank Podesta, Memphis patron, left for Valdina Farm in company with Emerson F. Woodward, and is expected to return to Louisville by the end of the week. Beckham W. Stivers, who has several of his thoroughbreds quartered at Churchill Downs in charge of Frank Muth, motored from his home in Lexington and plans to remain here until the end of the week. Jockey Warren Yarberry,. who has been engaged to ride the Shandbn Farms Burning Star in the Dixie Handicap Wednesday at Pimlico, left Tuesday evening by plane,, but plans to return here in time to ride at Churchill Downs Thursday.
