Derby Derby Candidates Candidates Await Await Call Call to to Post; Post; Royal Royal Crusader Crusader Surprises Surprises at at Churchill Churchill Leads Throughout To Defeat Aonbarr Runner-Up Closes Strong in Drive Under Own Courage — Jean Ferrante Victorious LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 30.— The R C Stables Royal Crusader, who didnt have a chance in last Saturdays Clark Handicap, because he lost his rider at the start, showed himself to be a "miler" of some parts when he won the Churchill Downs Handicap here this afternoon. This California five-year-old, who earned more than 0,000 on the West Coast last year, ran the eight furlongs of todays engagement i:: 1:3723 to finish a length and a quarter before Miss Helen Hickmans strongly supported Aonbarr. In defense of the latter, top weight in the race with 115 pounds, it might be said that the ride he received from the veteran Joe Dyer was anything but expert and it was chiefly on his own courage that he was able to take the place, a half length before Joseph E. Wideners Moscow II. Royal Crusader, ridden by Arthur Craig, made his own pace under clever rating and withstood repeated challenges from Moscow # II. in the last eighth, he was able to draw clear to the delight of the handful of those who backed him in the mutuels. The return on his chances was 9 for . Favorite Weakly Ridden Aonbarr, who lost the Clark Handicap to Whirlaway in the last few strides a few days ago, was on the inside much of the way and though he was able to keep up there, the rider took him up so often that he finally wound up in last place. On the stretch turn, the horse was taken to the outside and there, running mainly on his own courage, he rallied well enough to take second honors. After his repeated efforts to overtake the winner, Moscow II. weakened, though he was able to save third money two lengths before Swing and Sway. Meggy and Boss Hoss were the only other starters. The share of the purse to the winner was ,270. Calumet Farms Quien Es, winner of four of live engagements last year, became the first horse to capture two events this meeting, when he accounted for the six-furlong Shawnee Purse, the secondary feature on todays card. The son of Hygro left his rivals far behind before going a quarter mile and had little to do to protect his advantage to the end. He was ridden by Wendell Eads and won by five lengths. Little Kiss was eased near the end when it was apparent she could not catch the winner and shealmost lost the place. As it was she finished in front of Poly-melior by a narrow margin. Two other decisive winners today were Continued on Page Thirty-Five Royal Crusader Upsets Aonbarr In Downs Stake West Coast Invader Outruns Rivals From Start to Finish J " Continued from Page One * Jean Ferrante. owned by Letellier and Johnston, and Fair Weather, a juvenile filly from the stable of Joseph E. Widener. Jean Ferrante, who earlier in the season was mentioned as a potential Derby candidate, beat a field of three-year-olds at six and a half furlongs in the Bloomfield Purse, the fourth event on the card, and Fair Weather whipped six other two-year-olds at four and a half furlongs in the third race. The Widener youngster was timed in :52%, just a fifth of a second off the track record, and this effort put her seven lengths in advance of her nearest rival at the wire. * Sis Baker was second and First Prize third to Jean Ferrante, while closest to Fair Weather were Wiseasyou and Santa Rosa. First Prizes effort was to determine whether he will start in the Derby Saturday, but his owner, E. B. Johnston, had J not reached a decision immediately after the race. *
