Kentucky News and Notes CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., April 30. Mrs. Alfred Johnson, wife of the well-known • trainer and former jockey who guided Bubbling Over and Morvich to their • Kentucky Derby successes, returned with i her daughter from Cincinnati, her former home, where she has been visiting. Jack Redmond, the golf trick wizard, , is here for the Kentucky Derby. He is a . guest of Frank Catrone, trainer of the : Valdina Farms stable. Trainer J. H. McCoole reports the veteran, Sickle T., back in training. The horse will be brought along very slowly, with a view of returning him to racing late in the season. Clarence E. Lehr and Mrs. Lehr arrived from their home in Detroit and will remain for the Derby. Lehr is a director of the Detroit Jockey Club. Having served the five-day suspension meted out to him during the Keeneland meeting, Steve Brooks resumed riding today. Pimlico Lady and an unnamed two-year-old daughter of Byrd and Waterflag were registered this morning by owner-trainer H. Ekey, who brought the horse here from Lexington. Ekey is also conditioning Del-Tor Music for Dr. D. L. Proctor of Lexington, and Queen Blenheim and Cromarty for H. D. King of Erie, Pa. Leon Haas, who signed to ride B. F. Whitakers Requested in the Derby, arrived from Maryland. Andy Gumpere, former traveling ambassador for the Hollywood Jockey Club, arrived from his home in Dallas, Texas, and plans an indefinite visit. Louis Resseguet, a member of the mutuel department at Detroit, came from the motor city to witness the Derby. Resseguet is assisting in the construction of the totalizator being installed at the Detroit course. ] • • i , . : ] Thomas Piatt, breeder of Alsab, and his son, Thomas Carr Piatt, have advised trainer J. P. Sallee they probably would be here tomorrow and remain for the run- ning of the Derby. Vacationing at Hot Springs, Ark., since breaking his shoulder blade during the running of a race at Oaklawn Park, jockey Pete McLean, under contract to Jimmy Wallace, arrived this morning and re- ported to his contract employer. McLean does not expect to accept mounts until the Detroit meeting. Trainer Burley Parke reported John Marschs Bulldinger cast himself this morning in his stall, and after examination by the track veterinarian, the stewards permitted the Chicago-owned horse to be excused from the fifth race. According to word received this morning, H. C. Hatch, Canadian owner and breeder, will be here tomorrow and will take in the Derby festivities. J. J. Isaacson, activities manager of Ak-Sar-Ben, sent word that he may come on from Omaha for the Derby, depending on the pressure of business. Leo P. McLaughlin, mayor of Hot Springs, Ark., arrived yesterday from the famous health center and will be here until after the Derby. Otto Lehmann, former head of Arlington Park, is here and will be in Kentucky for another week. Mr. and Mrs. John D. Hertz are at their farm near Paris, Ky., and will motor to Louisville for the Derby. M. B. Goff, Pittsburgh owner and breeder .whose stable is racing under trainer T. R. Queen, and his sons are in Kentucky for the current week. Owner of several horses under the direction of C. J. Edwards, C. A. ONeil, Jr., reached Louisville today, coming from Miami, Fla.
