Payments Due for Five Local Fixtures Today Classic, American Derby, Lassie, Two Futurities Deadlines at Hand Today, May 1, is an important date on Chicagos 1942 racing calendar. It is the deadline for final eligibility payments on the five early closing stakes to be renewed this year at Arlington Park and Washington Park during the brilliant 67-day combined season of those two leading tracks — a season studded by 39 stakes and enriched by a gross distribution of ,300,000 to horsemen. It was estimated that the Classic and American Derby will have gross values of ipproximately 0,000 each, the two Fu-urities 5,000 each, the Lassie 5,000. ncidentally, these five fixtures which are imong Americas richest and most im-jortant stakes in the three -year -old and uvenile divisions, are the only early clos-ng events in the entire Chicago area. The three-year-old outlook being vhat it is, many observers believe that the hampionship of this division, the first leg f which will be won by some colt in the Kentucky Derby tomorrow, has little hance of being clarified until the Classic I tnd the American Derby bring it to a final lenouement during Americas great mid- summer season at Arlington Park and Washington Park, June 22-September 7. The other 34 stakes all have late closing dates, generally within ten days or two weeks of the runnings. The Arlington Park Handicap, and the Washington Park Handicap, the two major features for older horses and each with a 5,000 purse, close on July 1 and August 1, respectively, a full month in advance of each running date.
