Derby Derby Candidates Candidates Await Await Call Call to to Post; Post; Royal Royal Crusader Crusader Surprises Surprises at at Churchill Churchill Requested Goes Nine Furlongs In 1:54 3-5 With Haas Aboard First Fiddle Sent Mile in 1 :40 4-5; Sweep Swinger Works Five Furlongs in 1 :04 1-5 — Warren Wright and Ben Jones Entertaining Serious Hope of Starting Sun Again in Race LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 30.— Seven three-year-olds, all but a few of whom have shown enough at one time or another to recommend them as worthy challengers for Kentucky Derby honors, today had completed their more arduous preparation and now will rest on their laurels until they are called postward for the famous run of a mile and a quarter at Churchill Downs Saturday afternoon. All of the hopefuls were on the jfast track for exercise this morning, three of them indulging in beneficial I workouts, and one got his final Derby sharpener under actual racing conditions this afternoon. ** Those who were given trials "against the watch" were Ben F. ►Whitakers Requested, Mrs. Edward Mul-renans First Fiddle and Theodore D. Buhls Sweep Swinger, while Elwood B. Johnstons First Prize was under colors this afternoon for his last qualifying test. Meanwhile, it became apparent that Warren Wrights Calumet Farm, which sent Whirlaway out to win the Derby last spring in record time, will have a representative in Saturdays renewal in Sun Again. Trainer Ben A. Jones, who with owner Wright, has been undecided about the Derby status of the son of Sun Teddy, said that he intends to give the colt a brisk "blowout" tomorrow morning and that decision is Interpreted to mean the stable is entertaining more serious hopes of sending him to the post in the 5,000 special. Fractions of Requested Both Requested and First Fiddle Indulged in long trials this morning and each showed to excellent advantage. The Whitaker colt, with his Derby rider, Leon Haas, on his back, traveled a mile and a furlong in 1 :543/5, finishing stoutly, while First Fiddle was sent a handy mile in 1:4045. Requested ran the first quarter of his work in :25%, the half mile in :51, three-quarters in 1:16%, and the mile in 1:41 45. He was timed in 1:30 for the seven furlongs and thus traveled the final quarter in :2435, a hint that he might be in there fighting it out to the end. In his circuit around the Downs main course, First Fiddle stepped the first quarter in :2435, half mile in :49, and three-quarters in 1:15. This effort also encouraged his connections. Sweep Swinger was given a less exacting tuneup, for he was only setn five furlongs over which he breezed in 1:04 V5. Yesterday evening after the last race, as already reported, William Woodwards Apache and Mr. and Mrs. Barclay K. Douglas Fair Call worked a mile each. The Woodward three-year-old was timed in Continued on Page Thirty-Six Derby Candidates Await Bugle Call Requested, First Fiddle, Sweep Swinger Engage In Final Trials for Race Continued from Page One 1:4235, and he galloped out a mile and a furlong in 1:57 Vs. while Fair Call executed his move in 1:43 Vs. Meanwhile, hundreds of visitors are arriving in the city to jam-pack a community in which housing already is a problem because of the great defense activity. Many of those coming to Louisville to witness the Derby have been obliged to come early because of limited i transportation facilities and, for the same ! reason, probably will have to remain a few days after the classic. This circumstance already has become noticeable at Churchill Down in the increased attendance, which is making the current meeting the best here in many years. The Derby this year is arousing more widespread interest because of the great number of horses which seem to have excellent chances and because of the gruelling battle it is expected to produce. Requested and the Green tree Stables Devil Diver and Shut Out loom as the choices for the classic, but many of the others, including the Valdina Farms Val- dina Orphan and Hollywood, Mrs. Albert Sabaths Alsab, Belair Studs Apache and Mr. and Mrs. T. D. Grimes With Regards also have their especial admirers, and not without cause. Many, too, are pinning their hopes of selecting the Derby winner on the outsiders, "dark horses," who on their best efforts figure to be right there with the leaders as they flash under the wire. Sun Again is an enigma to some, in that his connections have made no positive announcement about their Derby plans, but should he be among the contestants, as now seems likely, he too will command much respect, especially since his splendid second to Valdina Orphan in last Tuesdays Derby Trial, in which he conceded seven pounds to the winner. Now that Jones has revealed his intention of puting the colt through a short, snappy spin tomorrow, thus priming him for his best, it is obvious that he and owner Wright are eagerly eyeing the gold and glory that would accrue to them through another Derby triumph. Devil Diver, Shut Out, Alsab, Dogpatch, With Regards, Valdina Orphan, Hollywood, Fairy Manah, Sir War and Boot and Spur made gallops this morning, and their trainers report them ready for Saturdays test.
