Jervis Spencer "Chase Attracts Field of Nine Cottesmore Makes Seasons Bow Under Top Impost of 157 Pounds BALTIMORE, Md., April 30.— Nine ranking members of the steeplechase ranks were named for the thirtieth running of the ,500 added Jervis Spencer Steeplechase Handicap, that will feature tomorrows sport at Pimlico. The second stakes for chasers during the current meeting, the Jervis Spencer, is one of the most sought after events for fencers. It will bring into competition for the first time this year such renowned hedge hoppers as George H. Bostwicks Cottesmore, Mrs. Ogden Phipps Bath, Kent Millers Elk Ridge, Mrs. F. Ambrose Clarks Boojum II., Louis B. Mayers Ossabaw, Rokeby Stables Redlands, and Montpeliers Rouge Dragon, and Caddie. Rokeby Stables Good Chance, the other entrant, made his 1942 bow at Middleburg on April 11, and in that about two-mile run he was an easy winner. George "Pete" Bostwick will handle his Cottesmore, who is burdened with the top impost of 157 pounds. He failed to win in two starts last year, but in 1940 was winner of the Grand National Handicap. Victorious in two stakes last year, Ossabaw will carry 154 pounds, and this will include J. Penrod. Good Chance, stakes winner over the local course, and coupled with Redlands, who commanded 6,000 at the Thomas Hitchcock sale last fall, follows next under 142 pounds, and Bath and Rouge Dragon will "tote" 141 pounds each. Caddies assignment is 140 pounds, and Boojum II. and Elk Ridge will shoulder 13ff pounds each.
