Morris Juvenile Son of Jack High Romps Home Seven Lengths Before Stylus at Belmont ELMONT, L. I., N. Y., May 14.— Jack S. L., flying the famous all scarlet of Alfred Hennin Morris made famous by the Barbarous Battalion, Rutless, Relentless and Remorseless, registered a facile and tremendously popular triumph in the unique Jockey Club Plate, which was the feature of todays thoroughbred sport at Belmont Park. Galloping away from a field of four rivals with impressive ease through the long home stretch, the tall chestnut son of Jack High bounced past the final marker with seven lengths to spare over William Zeiglers Stylus, the runner-up. Jock Whitneys Dove Pie was a distant third, another length and a half back, while Rex and Jamesborough completed the small field. Jack S. L., a ,000 yearling who graduated like a good colt racing for ,000 at Jamaica, was installed an odds-on favorite in the Jockey Club Plate and won as that sort of risk should, returning .40. The teletimer showed £9% for the five furlongs, a second and a fifth behind Sun Agains juvenile course standard, but few eye-witnesses doubted he could have bettered that time immeasurably if any occasion arose. Jack S. L. was the only member of the field leased for the race, being actually the property of Mrs. J. S. Letellier of New Orleans. The Jockey Club Plate qualified him handsomely for the juvenile, his lone stake opportunity at the meeting. Notables in Attendance A large Thursday gathering, one that included Col. E. R. Bradley, Harry Parr III. and numerous other prominent racing men, was present for the Jockey Club Plate, which is exclusively for two-year-olds owned or leased by Jockey Club members. The conquest of Jack S. L. was somewhat of a "lifesaver" for some of the followers of the favorites. The turnstiles showed an attendance of 15,943. Once again, the total represented an increase, compared to the crowd the corresponding day in 1941; in this instance, 12,985. Jack S. L. carried top weight of 122, spotting each of the others five pounds, and was well handled throoughout by Nick Wall. He broke well and moved up to be at Jamesborough s throatlatch and forcing the latters pace in the first quarter mile. Jamesborough couldnt run with Jack S. L. long and, entering the stretch, the choice opened up a long patch of daylight as Wall gave him his head momen- Continued on Page Forty-Four, r , i . Jockey Club Plate Goes to Jack S. L. Jamesborough collapsed badly in the final furlong and Stylus moved up under a drive to earn the place, far off the winner. Dove Pie outfinished Rex and Jamesborough for third. Dove Pie had "blinkers on" for the race. The public made Barrington Stables Scotland Light, ridden by Eddie Arcaro, a slight favorite in a field of seven class "C" sprinters going six furlongs on the main oval in the Rocket Handicap, then had the gratification of seeing him sweep down on-Phar Rong at the eighth pole and beat him a half length in 1:11%. Some two lengths back, Ben Gray, the early leader, was a completely tired third. Scotland Light was kept within a couple of lengths of the pace, while Ben Gray was forced to the limit to hold command early, then was going away at the end. He paid .30. Charley Howard won his first purse of the New York season when Buddy Haas kicked Yankee Dandy to a hard-earned tally, by three parts of a length in the mille and a sixteenth of the sixth. Cory-don, who looked all over a winner at the eighth pole, was second by a narrow patch of daylight over Loveday, who is gradually racing into condition. Corydon, racing on the extreme outside to the far corner, easily disposed of Naval Reserve and Paperboy, then couldnt peg back Yankee Dandy, who finished out in 1:43% and returned a scattering of admirers 9.70. Bulrushes Pinched Back The opener was a mad scramble among 14 cheap maiden male two-year-olds going five furlongs out of the juvenile course and resulted in a sheepskin for Col. Maxwell Howards Credentials. He was ridden by Jimmy Stout and closed fast down the outside of the field to be a length and a half in front in 1:00% at the line. Navy Blue ran evenly to finish second, a neck in front of Sweet Repose. Bulrushes, who was fourth, was pinched back abruptly in the last sixteenth, else would have been a factor. The winner paid 2.30. The first six of a field of 14 nonentities going three-quarters of a mile on the main track in what was the second offering finished within a length of one another. The camera called J. T. Taylors Hi Stranger the winner before De leer as the favored Ferocity finished third, inches farther away. James was the winning rider, nailing the pacemaking De leer right on the money, after taking the overland. Nearly half the field was spread out in cavalry charge formation across the course the last sixteenth. Hi Stranger paid a fortunate few 7.80 and fewer still 23.40 in the Daily Double. The race was run in 1:12%. Only four went postward for the Ross Fenton Steeplechase, the third race, and three finished with Harry Lamontagnes OKelly easily first. He and the favored Sir Bluesteel and Knights Quest were head and head at the end of the backfield, but from there in OKelly was outrunning the other two and won by four lengths in 3:47%, fair time for maidens. Sir Blue-steel, who made bad landings jumping through the hedges, beat Knights Quest the better part of a length for second.
